INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (4-15, 2-5 BIG EAST) dropped a 63-58 decision to the Butler University Bulldogs (10-9, 6-2 BIG EAST) in a BIG EAST Conference matchup Sunday afternoon at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. The Hoyas put together a late comeback, but couldn't find an answer and secure the victory.
Freshman guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) and junior guard Brittany Horne (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) paced the Hoyas with 15 points apiece. Adomako was 3-for-3 at the line and Horne was 4-for-8 from beyond the arc. Junior guard Logan Battle (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) rounded out those in double figures with 10 points. Freshman center Yazmine Belk (Queens, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) pulled down a squad-best seven rebounds.
Georgetown shot 38.1 percent in the game and the defense held the Bulldogs to 34.0 percent from the field, but GU was outrebounded, 44-35, and had 18 turnovers to Butler's 17.
Adomako opened the game with the first seven points for the Blue & Gray and the defense got stops turning to points on the other end as GU led early, 14-7. As a team, the Hoyas dominated the paint and hit the offensive boards to build the lead to nine.
Back-to-back 3-pointers from Horne and junior guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) made it 24-11 midway through the half. Butler ended the run with a three, but a put back down low by Battle continued to build the GU advantage. On the defensive end, the Hoyas employed a full-court press to disrupt the Bulldog offense and speed the pace of the game.
The Georgetown scoring slowed late in the half, and Butler began to heat up from downtown. The Bulldogs chipped away at the Hoya lead with a 20-4 run as the minutes ticked away in the first making it 34-32 in favor of Butler.
The Blue & Gray wouldn't score for the final four minutes trailing 34-24 at the break.
Butler scored first in the second, but two-consecutive slashes by freshman points guard DiDi Burton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College Prep) tied it at 36. The Bulldogs answered, but despite a tough end to the first, the Hoyas were right there battling.
Belk made a layup to spark a 7-0 run as the defense forced a turnover and Burton answered with another slash. The defense did their job once again and it resulted in a Horne trey to make it 45-41. Free throws allowed the Bulldogs to come back and tie it at 45,
Butler responded with a 6-0 run and despite a bucket from Adomako to stop it, GU was forced to battle back again.
After six scoreless minutes and looking at a 10-point deficit, Horne sank a 3-pointer and forced a turnover resulting in a layup to cut the lead to five, 57-52. The defense forced a shot clock violation, but couldn't score on the ensuing possession and gave away a pair of free throws on the other end.
The Hoyas were forced to foul in the final minute and even the rare four-point play from Horne wasn't enough resulted in the 63-58 decision.
The Hoyas will be back in action next weekend in a pair of home BIG EAST Conference matchups. Georgetown will host St. John's on Friday at 6 p.m., and and Seton Hall on Sunday at noon. Both games will be played at McDonough Arena. Live stats and a webcast featuring Ryan Sakamoto and Ben Gordon-Goldstein will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
