Jan. 21, 2015 WASHINGTON - Georgetown University men's soccer midfielder Tyler Rudy (Olney, Md./Sherwood) was picked up by Major League Soccer's New England Revolution on Wednesday as a discovery player. Rudy graduated in December 2014 and will join the Revs for preseason training.
"This is a terrific opportunity for Tyler and we're so happy for him," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "He worked hard to graduate early and he has a bright future in soccer and beyond. In his time here, he has always surpassed expectation, and I expect that ability to serve him well in his professional career."
Rudy earned Second Team All-BIG EAST as a senior and was a captain for the Blue & Gray. He appeared in all 23 games and was the squad's fifth-leading scorer with two goals and three assists for seven points including two game winners.
Rudy worked his way into the lineup appearing in 88 games in his career with 71 starts. On the Hilltop, he had seven goals with 12 assists for 26 points and posted five game winners.
Off the field, he was active in the athletics department and a BIG EAST All-Academic selection.
Discovery players are selected following the MLS SuperDraft. Each offseason, teams submit a list of players who they would be interested in signing and developing. By doing so, the team maintains exclusive negotiating rights until the end of the season. These players must be professional players who are undrafted and unsigned. Then, during the season, teams can add these players to the senior roster once the league and player have reached an agreement.
Rudy will see a familiar face at training as Hoya forward Steve Neumann (C'13) was selected as the fourth overall pick in last year's MLS draft by the Revolution. He appeared in 23 games his rookie season as a part of the team that went to the MLS Championship.
On Tuesday, senior goalkeeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) was selected with the 60th overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft by the Columbus Crew.
