Jan. 8, 2015 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (3-12, 1-2 BIG EAST) will have a pair of BIG EAST Conference foes this weekend. The Hoyas will welcome the Providence College Friars (4-11, 1-3 BIG EAST) to McDonough Arena on Friday at 7 p.m. On Sunday, GU will travel to Villanova University to take on the Wildcats (7-7, 2-1 BIG EAST) in a 5 p.m., matchup. Sunday's game will be televised live on FOX Sports 1.
Last week, the Hoyas opened conference play with a mark of 1-2. Additionally, freshman guard
Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week.
Adomako posted a trio of impressive performances. The rookie averaged 19.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists, helping down Marquette University, 83-76, on Friday night in a nationally-televised game.
Following a 13-point, eight-rebound game at Creighton on Tuesday, Adomako blew up over the weekend with a pair of double-doubles. Against Marquette, the freshman helped erase a double-digit deficit en route to a seven-point win with 21 points and 13 rebounds. She followed that showing with a career-high 23 points and 10 rebounds against No. 25/24 DePaul on Sunday.
Adomako is leading the team in scoring with 12.5 ppg and has posted a squad-high 7.7 rpg. Junior forward Dominique Vitalis (Bloomfield, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) is second with 9.5 ppg as well as 6.9 rpg and junior guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) rounds out the top three with 9.4 ppg.
Georgetown holds a +2.3 rebounding margin over opponents and is shooting 36.3 percent on the season.
The Friars are coming off of a 71-59 loss at Xavier last weekend. Chanise Baldwin recorded her second double-double of the season - and career - at Xavier. Baldwin netted a career-best 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field, and also made 4-of-6 attempts from the charity stripe. She added 12 rebounds, including a career-best nine defensive boards. Senior Karin Robinson was inserted into the starting line-up against Xavier after sophomore Sarah Beal was sidelined with an injury. Robinson posted double figures in the scoring column for just the second time this season (12 points) and added four rebounds and season highs in assists (5) and steals (3).
Providence's lone conference win was a 51-49 home victory against Villanova on December 3. The Friars are searching for their first road victory of the season.
The Hoyas are 25-28 all-time against the Friars and 14-10 at home. In the last meeting, GU won, 71-65, at McDonough Arena. Andrea White led the way with 17 points and 10 rebounds for her 14th double-double of the season, while Natalie Butler posted 10 points and a career-high 20 boards for her 22nd double-double on the year. Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) and Logan Battle (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) rounded out those in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Georgetown had a big day on the boards outrebounding the Friars, 62-39.
The Wildcats went 2-0 last weekend with a pair of big victories. The squad defeated No. 25/24 DePaul on Friday, 79-76, in overtime. `Nova then downed Marquette on Sunday, 68-48. Senior Emily Leer and junior Carolyn Coyer are leading the squad averaging 12.8 and 12.0 ppg, respectively.
In the DePaul victory, the Wildcats were led by Leer, who notched 25 points, and jCoyer, who established a new career high with 23 points. Leer was 10-of-18 from the field and 2-of-3 from long distance, while Coyer was 9-of-16 from the floor and 2-of-2 from long distance. Coyer also added a career-high nine rebounds, four assists and two steals.
The Hoyas are 19-36 all-time against the Wildcats, 19-34 in BIG EAST play and 6-20 on the road. In the last meeting, GU fell 65-52 at The Pavilion. White led the way with 16 points and pulled down nine boards. Georgetown outrebounded VU, 39-37, and shot 39.3 percent while also committing a season-low eight turnovers.
Friday's game tips off at 7 p.m., at McDonough Arena, tickets will be available at the door. A webcast featuring Ryan Sakamoto and Ben Gordon-Goldstein will be available through Georgetown's athletic website.
