WASHINGTON - After seeing a 2-0 lead disappear, the Georgetown University volleyball team rallied back for an exciting 3-2 (25-20, 26-24, 22-25, 16-25, 15-10) victory over DePaul University on Sunday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena.
The win snapped a three-match losing streak for the Hoyas as they improved to 8-12 overall and 2-5 in the BIG EAST. DePaul fell to 12-7 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
Three Hoyas finished in double figures in kills, led by Liv King (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) who had a match-high 18 kills. Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) was right behind her with 17 kills, while Lauren Saar (Richland, Mich./Plainwell) contributed 13. Saar completed the double-double with 10 digs and Paige McKnight (Atlanta, Ga./Dunwoody) also had a double-double performance with 50 assists and a career-high 17 digs. Kenzie Higareda (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) led all players in the match with 22 digs.
First Set
Saar and Sinnette each had four kills and Georgetown scored eight of the final nine points to come from behind and win the first set, 25-20. DePaul led for most of the set and held its largest advantage at 16-13. Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) contributed three kills, while Ashlie Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) had three blocks, including one of the solo variety. Saar and Higareda each had seven digs and McKnight had 11 assists and five digs.
Second Set
After the Blue Demons again led for much of the set, the Hoyas used a 5-1 run to erase a 19-18 deficit and take a 23-20 lead. DePaul saved two set points but, with the score tied at 24, a kill from King and DePaul attack error gave the set to Georgetown, 26-24. King led the offense with six kills in the frame while Saar had four kills and four digs. McKnight had 10 assists and eight digs.
Third Set
GU used a 15-7 run to take a late lead, 22-19, but, after a timeout DePaul scored the final six points to take the third set, 25-22. Sinnette had five kills to lead the Georgetown offense while King had four and Saar and Williams each had three. McKnight had 13 more assists and Higareda led the defense with six digs.
Fourth Set
DePaul used runs of 6-0 and 5-0, respectively, to pull away early and take the fourth set, 25-16, forcing a deciding fifth set. The Hoyas received four kills apiece from Sinnette and Speech in the set and Williams contributed three kills.
Fifth Set
Georgetown jumped out quickly in the fifth set, taking an early 7-3 lead and holding an 8-5 advantage at the changeover. After two DePaul points cut the lead to 8-7, the Hoyas opened things up with a 4-1 run to take a 12-8 lead. A kill from Saar eventually won the set, 15-10, and the match. King had three more kills in the fifth set while Higareda had all four of Georgetown's digs.
Season Notes
Sunday was Georgetown's first win of the season at McDonough Arena and the Hoyas improved to 2-2 on the season in five-set matches. GU has won four-straight decisions over DePaul dating back to the 2013 season.
For the season, Sinnette leads the Hoyas with 267 kills and 3.56 kills per set. McKnight has as team high .290 hitting percentage while also averaging 9.68 assists per set and leading the entire BIG EAST with 31 service aces. Speech leads the front court with 0.69 blocks per set while Higareda is atop the defense with 4.57 digs per set.
Georgetown will head back out on the road for two BIG EAST matches next weekend. The Hoyas will matchup against Xavier on Friday, October 16 at 3 p.m. before taking on Butler at 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 17.
