WASHINGTON - Despite receiving double-double efforts from three different players, the Georgetown University volleyball team dropped a tough 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 29-27, 25-21) decision at Butler on Saturday evening in a BIG EAST Conference match at Butler's Hinkle Fieldhouse.
The loss dropped the Hoyas to 8-14 on the season and 2-7 in the BIG EAST while Butler improved to 6-15 and 3-6 in conference play.
Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) led the way with a match-high 17 kills and 13 digs. Lauren Saar (Richland, Mich./Plainwell) also had a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs and Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) was in double figures with 13 kills. Paige McKnight (Atlanta, Ga./Dunwoody) had her second double-double in as many nights with 48 assists and a career-high 18 digs. Kenzie Higareda (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) finished with a match-high 24 digs while Liv King (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) was the fifth Hoya in double figures with 12 digs.
First Set
Georgetown won the opening set for the second-consecutive night, taking the frame, 25-22, behind eight kills from Sinnette. The score was back and forth until the Hoyas broke a 19-19 tie with a 5-1 run to take control, 24-20. A kill from King eventually sealed the set win to give GU a 1-0 lead in the match. McKnight had 12 assists and four digs in the set while Saar led all players with five digs.
Second Set
The Hoyas scored four-consecutive points to battle back and tie the score at 19 in the second set but, with things still knotted at 21, Butler scored the final four points to win the set, 25-21, and even the match. Sinnette and Speech each led the GU offense with four kills apiece while Higareda led the defense with seven digs and Sinnette added six.
Third Set
Georgetown trailed by as many as eight points early in the third set, but fought back with a 5-1 run to tie the score, 21-21. The two teams traded points with each side having multiple set-point opportunities. The Bulldogs eventually strung together consecutive points to win the set, 29-27. Five different Hoyas had three kills in the set and McKnight had 15 assists. Higareda had an astounding 11 digs to lead the defense and Ashlie Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) had two solo blocks.
Fourth Set
Butler took control of the fourth set with a 7-1 run to break a 10-all tie, taking a 17-11 lead. The Hoyas saved three set points, closing to within three, 24-21, but the Bulldogs finished things off with a kill. Williams led GU's offense with four kills in the fourth set while Saar added three. McKnight contributed 12 assists and six digs.
Season Notes
For the season, Sinnette leads the Hoyas with 296 kills and 3.57 kills per set. McKnight has as a team-high .299 hitting percentage while also averaging 9.81 assists per set. Speech leads the front court with 0.70 blocks per set, while Higareda is atop the defense with 4.67 digs per set.
Georgetown will return home to McDonough Arena next weekend for a pair of conference matchups. The Hoyas will play host to St. John's on Friday night at 8 p.m. before Providence visits the Hilltop on Sunday afternoon for a 2 p.m. match.
