WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University volleyball team fell to St. John's, 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-23), on Friday night in a BIG EAST Conference match at McDonough Arena.
The Hoyas fall to 8-15 on the season and 2-8 in BIG EAST play while the Red Storm improve to 15-10 overall and 5-5 in conference action.
Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) led the Hoya offense with 10 kills to only one attacking error for a .562 hitting percentage. Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) had nine kills and a team-high 11 digs. Paige McKnight (Atlanta, Ga./Dunwoody) had 28 assists and a career-high four blocks, while Kenzie Higareda (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) was in double figures with 10 digs.
First Set
After a back-and-forth first half of the set, St. John's erased a 16-15 deficit with a 9-2 run to bring the score to 24-18. Despite two set-point saves from GU, the Red Storm took the opening set, 25-20. Sinnette led the Hoyas with four kills and seven digs in the set. Speech added three kills and Higareda contributed five digs.
Second Set
The Red Storm opened the second set by scoring the first nine points and never looked back, winning the frame, 25-12. Sinnette and Speech each had three kills to lead Georgetown and Lauren Saar (Richland Mich./Plainwell) had four digs.
Third Set
The third set was tight from the beginning. The Hoyas used a 3-0 run to take a 14-11 lead, forcing a timeout by St. John's, but the Red Storm charged back with a 5-1 run to take the lead back, 16-15, forcing a GU timeout. Tied at 21, St. John's scored three-consecutive points to take a commanding 24-21 advantage. The Hoyas fought back with two-straight points, but the Red Storm took the set, 25-23, to sweep the match. Speech led the offense with four kills and teamed with McKnight for a pair of blocks. Saar had three kills, while Sinnette and Higareda led the defense with three digs apiece. Somto Egbuonu (Grand Prairie, Texas/South Grand Prairie) entered the match in the third set and had a kill and a solo block.
Season Notes
For the season, Sinnette leads the Hoyas with 305 kills and 3.55 kills per set. Speech leads the front court with 0.71 blocks per set and has a team-high .299 hitting percentage. McKnight is averaging 9.79 assists per set and leads the team with 31 service aces, while Higareda is atop the defense with 4.63 digs per set.
The Hoyas will conclude the weekend on Sunday with a 2 p.m. match versus Providence at McDonough Arena. Sunday will serve as Georgetown's Dig Pink match in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. The team will wear pink shoelaces and ribbons. Fans who wear pink to the match will receive a free pink Georgetown koozie and will have a chance to spin the Dig Pink prize wheel to win cool Georgetown prizes.
Additionally, Sunday is Girl Scout Day. Any Girl Scout who attends the match in uniform will receive a Georgetown Scout Patch.
