Volleyball Powers Past Providence, 3-1

WASHINGTON - Behind career-high performances from Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) and Liv King (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion), the Georgetown University volleyball team snapped a three-match losing streak with a 3-1 (25-19, 20-25, 25-9, 25-17) win over Providence College on Sunday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference match at McDonough Arena. Sunday was Georgetown's Dig Pink match in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.

The Hoyas improved to 9-15 on the season and 3-8 in BIG EAST play while the Friars fell to 10-15 overall and 1-10 in conference action.

Speech led the offense with 14 kills, while hitting at a .455 clip, and set a career high with seven total blocks, including two solo efforts. King chipped in 10 kills while recording a personal-best four service aces and a career-high .421 hitting percentage. Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) was also in double figures with 11 kills. Paige McKnight (Atlanta, Ga./Dunwoody) finished with 44 assists, while Kenzie Higareda (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) led all players in the match with 12 digs and Lauren Saar (Richland, Mich./Plainwell) had 10.

First Set
The Hoyas used separate runs of 5-0 and 4-0, respectively, to take control of the set, 15-8. After Providence cut the lead to four, 22-18, GU scored three of the final four points to take the opening set, 25-18. Speech led all players in the frame with five kills and Saar contributed three. McKnight had 10 assists and King had two of her aces.

Second Set
The Friars broke open a 15-all tie with a 6-1 run to take control of the set, eventually winning by a 25-20 score. Sinnette led Georgetown with five kills while Speech and King each added three. Saar led the defense with five digs and McKnight added 10 more assists.

Third Set
GU came out of the break quickly in the third set, opening a 10-1 lead. The Hoyas would ride their .714 team hitting percentage to a 25-9 set victory -- the second time this season that they have held their opponents to less than 10 points in a set. King led the offense with four kills in the third set and Speech added three more kills and five total blocks.

Fourth Set
The Hoyas used a run of five-consecutive points to take control early in the fourth set, 9-3. A solo block by Speech extended the lead to seven, 15-8, and GU never looked back, winning the final set, 25-17. Sinnette had a team-high four kills in the set and Speech added three more kills. Higareda led the defense with five digs and McKnight contributed 14 assists.

Season Notes
For the season, Sinnette leads the Hoyas with 316 kills and 3.51 kills per set. Speech leads the front court with 0.75 blocks per set and has a team-high .306 hitting percentage. McKnight is averaging 9.84 assists per set and leads the team with 32 service aces, while Higareda is atop the defense with 4.56 digs per set.

Georgetown will embark on a four-match road trip over the next two weekends, playing matches at Seton Hall, Villanova, DePaul and Marquette.
