Oct. 30, 2015 WASHINGTON - The No. 7/7 Georgetown University men's soccer squad will travel to Villanova University (8-7, 3-4 BIG EAST) on Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m., matchup at the Higgins Soccer Complex. The Hoyas are currently 11-2-2 on the season and 7-0-0 in BIG EAST Conference play, sitting alone in first place with two games remaining in the regular season.
On Wednesday, senior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph) scored two goals and the team needed two comebacks as well as extra time after a wild second half to down the Seton Hall University Pirates, 3-2, in a soggy BIG EAST Conference matchup.
The win continued GU's 12-game unbeaten streak, breaking the program record of 11 set in 2012. It also clinched a first-round bye in the BIG EAST Championship for the Hoyas. This is the first time in the three years of the latest incarnation of the conference when the BIG EAST Championship will be played exclusively at home sites. GU will host a semifinal matchup at Shaw Field on Nov. 12 at 2 p.m.
On Monday, junior defender Joshua Yaro (Santa Barbara, Calif./Cate School) was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in a 1-0 win at St. John's. Additionally, Allen was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Yaro was a big part of the defensive effort with a goal-saving clear late in the second half. Allen scored the game winner against St. John's with a penalty kick in the 59th minute.
Allen leads the team in scoring with 22 points on a team-high eight goals as well as six assists. Junior forward Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) is second with four goals and a conference-best nine assists for 17 points. Sophomore midfielder Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) rounds out the top three with 13 points on five goals and three assists for the year. Freshman goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) has been impressive in the net with 47 saves to his credit over 15 games as well as seven shutouts.
Villanova picked up a vital 2-0 win at St. John's Wednesday night and currently sits in seventh place in the BIG EAST standings with nine points, one shy of DePaul and Providence which are tied for fifth place. The Wildcats are led by Will Steiner with five goals and five assists for 15 points, while Sean Sheridan has 13 points on five goals and three assists.
The Hoyas are 23-11-5 all-time against the Wildcats and 8-6-3 on the road against the squad. Last year, Georgetown won, 2-1, on the road. Basuljevic scored the game winner on an assist from Bakie Goodman (Sarasota, Fla./Pine View School for the Gifted) in the 85th minute.
Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network. Live stats will also be available through www.GUHoyas.com.
