WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University volleyball team wrapped up a three-match road trip on Tuesday evening, falling 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-19) to Creighton in a BIG EAST Conference match played at Creighton's D.J. Sokol Arena.
Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) and Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) led the Hoyas with nine kills apiece, while Paige McKnight (Atlanta, Ga./Dunwoody) had 26 assists and nearly completed the double-double with nine assists. Kenzie Higareda (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) led the defense with 17 digs and Sinnette was also in double figures with 10 digs.
The Hoyas (7-11, 1-4 BIG EAST) fell behind in the first set when Creighton (11-7, 5-0 BIG EAST) used a 6-0 run to break a 7-7 tie and open a 13-7 lead. The Bluejays maintained that lead the remainder of the set, eventually winning the frame, 25-17, to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
It was Georgetown that used a run to break a 7-7 tie in the second set, scoring three-consecutive points ââ'¬" with kills from Speech and Liv King (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion), sandwiching a service ace from Lauren Saar (Richland, Mich./Plainwell) ââ'¬" to give the visitors a 10-7 lead. The Hoyas maintained their lead, trading points with Creighton until the Bluejays used four-straight points to jump ahead, 21-19. A kill from Speech and a Creighton error tied the score at 21, but the Bluejays scored four of the final five points to take the set, 25-22.
Creighton used five kills and two blocks to open a quick 9-1 lead in the third set. Georgetown began chipping away, scoring eight of the next 10 points to cut the deficit to 11-9. Sinnette, Williams, King and Speech all had kills in the run and the Hoyas were aided by four Creighton errors. After three-straight points extended the Bluejays' lead back to 14-9, GU embarked on another run, cutting the score to one, 16-15, behind a 6-2 charge. Speech led the way with three kills while Sinnette contributed two. Creighton, however, answered right back with four-consecutive points to take control and, despite kills from Sinnette, Williams and King, went on to win the third set, 25-19.
The Blue & Gray will return home to McDonough Arena for a pair of BIG EAST contests during Homecoming Weekend. Marquette will visit the Hilltop on Friday for a 7 p.m. match before DePaul comes in on Sunday for a 2 p.m. contest.
