WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University volleyball team returned home to McDonough Arena following a three-match road trip, but fell to a tough Marquette University squad, 3-0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-20), on Friday evening in a BIG EAST Conference match.
The Hoyas fell to 7-12 overall and 1-5 in the BIG EAST. Marquette improved to 12-6 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) finished with a match-high 11 kills while Liv King (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) had eight and Lauren Saar (Richland, Mich./Plainwell) and Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) each finished with seven. Paige McKnight (Atlanta, Ga./Dunwoody) led all players with 35 assists while Kenzie Higareda (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) was in double figures with 10 digs.
First Set
Both teams used runs at the beginning of the set that led to the score being tied, 9-9. Neither side managed a lead of more than one point until, after a kill from Williams saved a set point, Marquette scored back-to-back points to win the set, 26-24. Three Hoyas -- Ashlie Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount), Saar and Sinnette -- all had three kills in the first set. McKnight at 13 assists and Higareda led all players with five digs.
Second Set
Sinnette slammed down seven kills, but Marquette used a late 4-0 run to pull ahead 22-19 and take the second set, 25-22. Georgetown trailed early in the set, but fought back to tie the score at 13 behind three kills and a service ace from Sinnette. McKnight contributed 13 assists for the second-straight set while Saar led the defense with four digs.
Third Set
After the Hoyas tied the score at 20, Marquette scored the final five points to win the set, 25-20. The Golden Eagles led 10-4 early, but GU used a 7-1 run to tie things up at 11. The Hoyas used another charge, this time a 5-1 run, to knot things back up at 20. King had four kills in the frame while Higareda recorded four digs to reach double figures for the match
Season Notes
Sinnette now leads the Hoyas with 250 kills and 3.57 kills per set. McKnight has as team high .298 hitting percentage while also averaging 9.66 assists per set and leading the entire BIG EAST with 29 service aces. Speech leads the front court with 0.70 blocks per set while Higareda is atop the defense with 4.59 digs per set.
The Blue & Gray will conclude Homecoming Weekend on Sunday with a 2 p.m. matchup with DePaul at McDonough Arena.
