Nov. 14, 2015 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University cross country program earned 10 nods to the all-region list released late on Friday night by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) after the completion of all of the regional championships. The No. 15 men's team won its 11th Mid-Atlantic Region title in program history as it cruised to a 16-point victory (44 points) ahead of No. 23 Penn (60) and No. 22 Villanova (67). The No. 14 women's team finished second behind No. 10 Penn State (60) with 75 points. For the 10th time in the last 11 years, the men's and women's programs both earned a berth to the NCAA Championships.
The all-region honoree list is comprised of 450 student-athletes (225 men, 225 women) who finished among the top 25 in their respective regional championships.
On the men's side, the five point scorers each earned All-Mid-Atlantic honors. Georgetown is one of just 12 schools in the country to name five or more (maximum seven) student-athletes to the all-region list. The Hoyas stand alone as the only BIG EAST school to name all five point scorers all-region and is one of two teams from the Mid-Atlantic Region. Of the 12 institutions, eight are ranked among the top 30 in the most recent USTFCCCA poll.
For the women, Georgetown is one of 10 institutions to name five or six point scorers to the all-region list with no schools collecting seven accolades. The Hoyas are one of two BIG EAST schools to earn five regional honors along with the No. 4 Providence Friars and one of two institutions from the Mid-Atlantic Region along with Penn State, a team that also tallied five honors. Of the 10 schools to earn at least five nods, all are ranked among the top 30 in the most recent USTFCCCA poll with nine of them appearing among the top 15.
The honor comes nearly two weeks after the Hoyas collected a handful of accolades following the BIG EAST Conference Championship. The Blue & Gray tallied eight league honors on the men's side (5 first team, 3 second team) along with the Men's Coaching Staff of the Year nod, while the women recorded four on the all-conference teams (3 first team, 1 second team).
The Hoyas return to competition on Saturday, November 21 when they return to the E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky., for the 2015 NCAA Championships. This will be the second time this season that both teams compete on the course as the men and women both ran at the 2015 NCAA Pre-National Meet in October.
