Nov. 16, 2015 2015 NCAA Bracket
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team (15-2-2) earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament on Monday afternoon. The team received the third overall seed in the tournament of 48 where the top 16 teams are seeded and receive a first-round bye. This marks the squad's fifth tournament berth in the past six seasons.
GU made history Sunday afternoon, winning the BIG EAST Championship with a 2-1 double overtime victory over the then-No. 5/6, and second-seeded, Creighton University Bluejays (17-3-0) in the BIG EAST Championship Game at Shaw Field in front of a crowd of 1,541.
It is the first BIG EAST Tournament Championship in program history, continuing a record-breaking season for the Blue & Gray. Last week, the Hoyas won the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship for the fifth time in program history. Sunday's victory continues a record 16-game unbeaten streak and 13-consecutive wins. It is also the first time in program history that the squad has earned an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
The Blue & Gray has been in the national polls for the entire season. Last week, the team was No. 3 in the NSCAA poll and Georgetown moved to No. 1 in TopDrawerSoccer.com's poll on Monday.
The Hoyas have received a number of accolades this season with the squad earning two of the BIG EAST's top awards.
Junior defender Joshua Yaro (Santa Barbara, Calif./Cate School) was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year as well as a unanimous First Team All-BIG EAST selection. Freshman goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) was the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and a First Team All-BIG EAST honoree. Also earning a spot on the first team was senior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph) and sophomore forward Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac).
On the second team, junior forward Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) earned a spot as well as three senior defenders Keegan Rosenberry (Ronks, Pa./Lancaster Menonnite), Cole Seiler (Anderson, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal School) and Josh Turnley (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area).
The coaching staff also earned BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year accolades.
Georgetown's NCAA Tournament berth is the fifth under Head Coach Brian Wiese. The Hoyas have been to the tournament on six previous occasions. Last season, Georgetown failed to advance against the eventual national champions, the University of Virginia Cavaliers, in the Elite 8.
In 2012, the squad was the national runner up falling to Indiana, 1-0, in the national championship game. Prior to that season, the program had never moved beyond the second round of the tournament with previous appearances in 2010, 1997 and 1994. The Hoyas are 8-4-3 overall in the NCAA Tournament.
The Blue & Gray will play the winner of Lehigh University and Hoftstra University. Georgetown is 2-0 all-time against Lehigh with the last meeting coming in 2012, a 2-0 Hoya victory. Georgetown is 0-1 all-time against Hofstra with the lone meeting coming during the 1996 season.
Kickoff for the second round will be on Sunday, November 22 at Shaw Field at 1 p.m. Live stats and a free webcast featuring Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser will be available at www.GUHoyas.com. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or through www.WeAreGeorgetown.com.
