WASHINGTON - In a match that featured 46 tied scores and 19 lead changes, the Georgetown University volleyball team dropped a heartbreaker on Friday night, ending its season with a 3-2 (23-25, 26-28, 30-28, 26-24, 15-7) loss to Creighton University in a BIG EAST Conference match at McDonough Arena. The match was broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
Georgetown ends its season at 10-21 overall and 4-14 in the BIG EAST. Creighton, which had already clinched the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship, improved to 23-8 overall and 17-1 in conference action.
Several Hoyas had career nights on Friday, and three finished with double-double performances. Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) led the offense with a career-high 23 kills and also added 15 digs. Lauren Saar (Richland, Mich./Plainwell), playing in her final match in a Georgetown uniform, just missed out on a 20-20 effort, finishing with 19 kills and 20 digs. Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) had 15 kills and Ashlie Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) rounded out those in double figures with 12 kills. Kenzie Higareda (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) set a new career high with 34 digs, leading all players in the match. Paige McKnight (Atlanta, Ga./Dunwoody) also had a double-double with a career-best 62 assists and 16 digs.
The GU frontcourt had a season-high 11 blocks, led by six total blocks, including two solo blocks, from Speech. Williams had five blocks, including two of the solo variety, and Meghan Richard (Firestone, Colo./Niwot) doubled her previous career high with four blocks.
First Set
Creighton used a 3-0 run midway through the set to take a 16-13 lead. Trailing 21-17, and coming out of a timeout, the Hoyas scored five of the next six points to tie the score at 22 on a kill from Sinnette. A kill from Williams and another kill by Sinnette gave GU set point, 24-22, and, after a Creighton point, a huge kill by Sinnette gave the Hoyas the win, 25-23. Sinnette led all players in the set with an astounding eight kills. Saar added six kills and led the defense with nine digs. McKnight had 15 assists and eight digs while Higareda contributed seven digs.
Second Set
The Bluejays jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in the second set before the Hoyas ever got on the board. GU began chipping away, however, and tied things up at 15 before an ace by Saar put Georgetown ahead, 16-15. Creighton would come back to take a 23-20 lead, but the Hoyas answered with four-consecutive points to bring the score to set point, 24-23, on a kill by Saar. The Bluejays would save three separate set points before a kill by Speech and a Creighton error gave Georgetown the exciting 28-26 set victory. Speech led the spirited effort with seven kills, while Williams and Saar each had four. Higareda was a stalwart on defense with nine digs and McKnight contributed 17 assists.
Third Set
It was GU's turn in the third set to jump out to a lead, going up 18-13, on an ace by Higareda. Creighton fought back to tie the score at 21 and both teams traded several points, each saving multiple set points. The Bluejays would eventually string two points together, breaking a 28-all tie, to win the set, 30-28. Sinnette led the Hoyas with five kills in the set, while Speech had four and Williams and Saar each added three. Higareda again had nine digs and McKnight tallied 15 more assists.
Fourth Set
The Hoyas again had a lead in the fourth set, 14-9, but Creighton utilized a 7-2 run to knot things up at 16. The teams again went back-and-forth, remaining tied at 22 until two Creighton kills gave the visitors set point, 24-22. Back-to-back kills by Sinnette tied the score, 24-24. The Bluejays, however, responded with two-consecutive points to win the set, 26-24, and bring the match to a deciding fifth set. Sinnette recorded five kills in the fourth set to lead the offense, while Saar had four. McKnight had 11 assists and Higareda led the defense with seven digs, while Saar contributed five.
Fifth Set
Already leading 7-6 in the fifth set, Creighton scored five-straight points to take control, eventually winning the set, 15-7, to complete the comeback and win the match, 3-2. Sinnette had four more kills in the set to give her a new personal best.
Season Notes
Prior to the match, the Hoyas celebrated Senior Day, honoring Saar with a pregame ceremony ... With her first kill of the match, Sinnette became the first Georgetown player since 2002 to reach 350 kills in a season ... The 62 assists by McKnight and 34 digs by Higareda were the most by a Georgetown player since October 24, 2014 against DePaul.
For the year, Sinnette led the Hoyas with 372 kills and 3.58 kills per set. Speech finished atop the front court with 0.75 blocks per set and had a team-high .290 hitting percentage. McKnight averaged 9.80 assists per set and led the team with 36 service aces, while Higareda guided the defense with 4.69 digs per set, setting a new program record with 544 digs.
