No. 3 Hoyas Host Hofstra in NCAA Tournament Matchup

Nov. 21, 2015

WASHINGTON - The No. 2/1, and third-seeded, Georgetown University men's soccer squad will host the Hofstra University Pride on Sunday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Shaw Field at 1 p.m. The Hoyas are 15-2-2 on the season and earned a bye in the first round of the tournament. The Pride defeated Lehigh, 2-1, in overtime on Thursday night to advance and enter the game with a mark of 14-7-0.

Georgetown's NCAA Tournament berth is the fifth under Head Coach Brian Wiese. The Hoyas have been to the tournament on six previous occasions. Last season, Georgetown failed to advance against the eventual national champions, the University of Virginia Cavaliers, in the Elite 8.

In 2012, the squad was the national runner up falling to Indiana, 1-0, in the national championship game. Prior to that season, the program had never moved beyond the second round of the tournament with previous appearances in 2010, 1997 and 1994.

The Hoyas are 7-4-4 overall in the NCAA Tournament and 5-1 in their opening game.

Junior defender Joshua Yaro (Santa Barbara, Calif./Cate School) was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year as well as a unanimous First Team All-BIG EAST selection. Freshman goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) was the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and a First Team All-BIG EAST honoree. Also earning a spot on the first team was senior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph) and sophomore forward Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac).

On the second team, junior forward Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) earned a spot as well as three senior defenders Keegan Rosenberry (Ronks, Pa./Lancaster Menonnite), Cole Seiler (Anderson, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal School) and Josh Turnley (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area).

The coaching staff also earned BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year accolades.

As a team, the Hoyas won the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship as well as the BIG EAST Tournament to earn the program's first ever title and automatic NCAA Tournament berth.

Allen leads the team in scoring with 29 points on a team-high 11 goals as well as seven assists. In the BIG EAST Championship, he scored his 49th-career goal to tie for the program's career goals record. Muyl is second with five goals and a squad-best nine assists for 19 points. Basuljevic rounds out the top three with 14 points on five goals and four assists for the year. Marcinkowski has been impressive in the net with 56 saves to his credit over 19 games as well as eight shutouts.

Hofstra, the Colonial Athletic Association winners, defeated the Patriot League-champion Lehigh Mountain Hawks, 2-1, in overtime at home on Thursday night in the opening round to advance to the round of 32. Hofstra is making the fifth-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. The team made it previously in 1968, 2004, 2005 and 2006. Four of the five trips have come under Head Coach Richard Nuttall.

The Hoyas are 0-1 all-time against the Pride. The lone meeting was a 2-0 Hofstra victory at the University of Maryland Tournament during the 1996 season.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., at Shaw Field. Tickets will be available at the gate.

The game will be broadcast free on GUHoyas.com with Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser calling the action. Live stats will also be available through GU's athletic website.

The winner of Sunday's match advances to the third round on Nov. 29. The Hoyas have secured home-field advantage through the quarterfinals.
