Muyl Signs Homegrown Contract with New York Red Bulls

Dec. 22, 2015

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University men's soccer junior forward Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) signed a Homegrown Player Contract with the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer (MLS) today in New York. Muyl will forgo his senior season and is officially a member of the Red Bulls.

"I'm really excited," said Muyl. "This has been a goal of mine my whole life, and to be able to start my career in a place that I know, in a place that I've grown up, around people that I've grown up with, is an honor. I'm excited to start."

Muyl was a First Team All-Great Lakes Region honoree and earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Second Team. The forward was Georgetown's second-leading scorer overall with six goals and a team-best 10 assists for 22 points. His 11 assists ranked him second in the league and eighth in the nation. Muyl had a squad-high six assists in BIG EAST play as well. He was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 28, and was Preseason All-BIG EAST.

It was his second-consecutive nod to the All-BIG EAST Second Team, and his first regional honor.

In his career, Muyl has tallied 12 goals and 25 assists for 49 points in 62 games played. He has three game winners to his credit. He leaves the Hilltop ranked eighth in program history in career assists.

The Homegrown Player Rule is a program that allows MLS teams to sign local players from their own development academies directly to MLS first team rosters. To place a player on its Homegrown List, players must have resided in that club's home territory and participated in the club's youth development system for at least one year, as well as meeting other unspecified league requirements.

Prior to Georgetown, Muyl played for the Red Bulls Academy. He was the Red Bulls U-16 team-leading goal scorer and notched the game winner in the 2012 U.S. Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) National Championship. Noticed by U.S. Soccer Federation, Muyl was called up and captained the U.S. U-17 Men's National Team during Mondial Minimes in 2011 in Montaigu, France.

In 2013, Muyl helped Red Bulls U-18 claim the USSDA National Championship after finishing as the U-18 top scorer with 20 goals. After the championship, he was honored as the top player in the 2013 USSDA finals. Muyl was later named to the U.S. roster for the 2013 U-18 Milk Cup in Northern Ireland, and spent time with the U.S. National Team Residency Program. As a freshman, he was called into camp with the U.S. U-20 Men's National Team and was last called up in July 2015 for a College Identification training camp with the U.S. U-23 team.

Muyl is the second player in GU program history to sign a Homegrown Contract, joining senior Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph) who signed with the Red Bulls on Monday. Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese has now had 11 players be drafted or sign with an MLS club in his tenure on the Hilltop.
