WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball squad (4-22, 2-12 BIG EAST) lost, 65-56, to the Butler University Bulldogs (13-13, 9-6 BIG EAST) Sunday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena. The hot-shooting Bulldogs managed to pull away late despite some big efforts down low by the Blue & Gray.
"We had the energy, but we played in spurts," said Head Coach Natasha Adair. "Consistency has been our word for the year, and it's not going to be anything different after this game. You see a lot of good things that we've been focusing on, that we execute really well, but it needs to be for the whole duration of the game."
Junior guard Logan Battle (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) led the way for the Hoyas with a season-high 17 points. She was the lone Hoya in double figures and was 7-of-13 from the floor. Sophomore guard Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) pulled in a career-high 14 rebounds and added nine points as well. Freshman Yazmine Belk (Queens, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) scored eight points and had nine boards in the contest.
The Hoyas outrebounded the Bulldogs, 50-36, and had 13 turnovers while Butler had nine. GU shot 32.9 percent (23-for-70) from the field and held BU to 37.7 percent (20-for-53) from the field. However, the Bulldogs shot an impressive 46.2 percent (12-of-26) from beyond the arc.
Blaire Langlois led the way for Butler with 32 points including nine 3-pointers.
The Hoyas jumped out to a small lead, but for every advantage, the Bulldogs seemed to have an answer. With Butler leading by one, 6-5, GU managed a 6-0 run sparked by a layup by Battle to put the Blue & Gray up by five at 14:34.
Butler answered and regained the one-point lead at 9:56, but once again a 6-0 run put the Hoyas back on top. The run was all Battle with six-consecutive points including a big 3-pointer.
Five was the biggest lead the Blue & Gray would get as the Bulldogs once again countered.
With the Bulldogs leading by one, junior guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) came down and hit a three to once again give the Blue & Gray the lead. Butler tied it back up, and added back-to-back 3-pointers as the Hoyas battled to stop the outside threat.
GU answered with a trey by Battle to cut it to three and the junior added a block setting up a layup from Woodard to make it 28-27.
Butler managed two late buckets to make it 32-27 at the break.
Battle led the Blue & Gray in the first with 11 points, while Woodard had nine boards in the half.
The Bulldogs opened the second half with an 8-0 run on a pair of treys and with 14 minutes to go, it was a 10-point deficit for the Blue & Gray. Georgetown didn't back down, however, chipping away slowly.
Battle continued to get buckets and the GU defense buckled down. With a seven-point deficit, freshman point guard Justyce Swango (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) buried a 3-pointer to make it 44-40 at the 10-minute mark. Butler matched, but Belk converted the three-point play making the score 47-43.
Every time Butler tried to pull away, GU came back. Once it was a big board from Belk and another time it was a put-back in traffic from junior forward Dominique Vitalis (Bloomfield, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's).
Over the final 10 minutes, Georgetown tried to keep it a two-possession game. The posts were active down low, but the Bulldogs kept hitting from beyond the arc to stop Hoya momentum.
Georgetown will head out on its final road trip of the regular season next weekend with a contest at No. RV/24 Seton Hall University on Friday at 7 p.m., and a game at St. John's University on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Friday's contest will be shown live on the BIG EAST Digital Network, and Sunday's game will be broadcast live on ESPN3. Live stats will be available for both contests at www.GUHoyas.com.
