WASHINGTON - The Georgetown women's tennis team extended its win streak to three on Thursday afternoon when it defeated Navy 6-1 at the Arlington YMCA. The Hoyas picked up five wins in singles play and took the doubles point with victories from the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.
"There is nothing like winning consecutive close matches," said Head Coach Gordie Ernst. "The girls have gained so much confidence from these wins, and it couples well with the tremendous fight they show in every match."
Victoire Saperstein (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School) battled Samantha Droop in the No. 1 singles slot and ultimately prevailed winning in three sets, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
"Victoire has struggled with the flu for two weeks," said Ernst. "She was down a set and a break today, and battled back to win. It shows great character and a will to win for her teammates."
Sophie Panarese (Milton, Mass./Milton Academy) also found herself in a back-and-forth matchup, but she fell to Logan Antill in three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 from the No. 2 slot. The Hoyas would go on to win the remainder of the singles matchups.
Sophia Barnard (Mill Neck, N.Y./Portledge School) was victorious from the No. 3 spot, taking down Katie Porter in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Daphne de Chatellus (Tiburon, Calif./Redwood) earned her third straight win from the No. 5 position when she defeated Audrey Channell, 6-3, 6-3.
Casey Marx (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) also recorded her third straight spring victory as she had a 6-2, 6-1 win over Allison Pavlansky from the No. 6 slot. From the No. 4 position, Liselot Koenen (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) triumphed over Amanda Keller in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
In doubles action, the duo of Koenen and Panarese, that has gone 3-0 dating back to Feb. 15, defeated Summer Ralston and Claudia Mackenzie, 8-4. Barnard and Marx were victorious over Antill and Keller, 8-3 to secure the doubles point.
The Blue & Gray will next face Seton Hall on March 7, a makeup of the previously postponed matchup from Feb. 8.
