WASHINGTON - No. 24 Georgetown led by as many as 13 points in the second half before Providence raced back to take the lead and the Hoyas had a chance to take the lead in the waning seconds but could not convert in a 74-71 loss to the Friars at Verizon Center Wednesday night.
It was the second-straight loss at home for Georgetown, who falls to 15-7 overall and 7-4 in the BIG EAST, while Providence improves 1o 17-6 overall and 7-3 in league play.
Junior guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central/Oak Hill) scored a game-high 21 points to lead four players in double figures for the Hoyas. Senior center Joshua Smith (Kent, Wash./Kentwood/UCLA) added 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and four steals before fouling out, while freshman forward Isaac Copeland (Raleigh, N.C./Bridgeton Academy [N.H.]) had 10 points and seven rebounds and guard Tre Campbell (Washington, D.C./St. John's College HS) added 10 points. Senior guard Jabril Trawick (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends) had nine points, five rebounds and three assists.
Georgetown led by 13 points, 59-46 with 11:40 to play in the game after a 3-pointer from Smith-Rivera, but the Friars was able to take a 68-66 lead after two free throws from Carson DeRosiers with 3:46 to play. The Hoyas would take a 69-68 lead two minutes later on a free throw from Trawick and two more from Smith-Rivera with 1:51 left in the game, but could not extend the lead.
LaDontae Henton hit two free throws with 1:11 to play to give the Friars the lead and Smith-Rivera hit a pair with 45 seconds left as the Hoyas went ahead 71-70. DeRosiers hit two more shots from the charity stripe with 32 seconds left, the Hoyas could not convert on their end and Ben Bentil hit two free throws with nine seconds left to push the Providence lead to 74-71. A 3-pointer from Smith-Rivera was off the mark at the buzzer.
Georgetown led by three points, 41-38, at halftime, but Providence used a 6-2 spurt over the first 2:49 of the second half and took a 44-43 lead on a layup from Kris Dunn. The Hoyas responded with a 16-2 run over 4:56 and took a 59-46 lead on a 3-pointer from Smith-Rivera before Providence made a 20-6 run over 6:33 and took the lead on a layup from DeRosiers.
A 3-pointer at the buzzer from Smith-Rivera gave Georgetown a three-point lead at the break, 41-38, after Providence had raced back from a nine-point deficit and taken a late lead during the opening 20 minutes.
The Hoyas had jumped out to the early lead, taking an 8-2 advantage on a trey from Smith-Rivera, but Providence fought back to tie the game at 14-all on a 3-pointer from Dunn. Georgetown responded with a 12-3 run over 3:35 and took a 26-17 lead on a Smith-Rivera 3-pointer with 9:06 to play. GU still led by eight points, 34-26, after free throws from Copeland with 4:55 left in the half, but a 9-0 spurt from the Friars gave the visitors a 35-34 lead with 1:44 left.
A Copeland layup and Smith free throw gave GU a 38-35 lead, but Dunn hit a shot from long distance to tie the game before Smith-Rivera's shot gave the Blue & Gray the lead at the break.
Georgetown shot 42.6 percent from the floor (23-of-54), hit 40.0 percent of its three-pointers (8-of-20) and was 68.0 percent from free throw line (17-of-25). The Hoyas held a 32-31 advantage on the boards, handed out 17 assists and committed 15 turnovers.
Georgetown is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 7, playing at Villanova. Tipoff at Wachovia Center is slated for 2 p.m. The game will be shown live on FOX, with Gus Johnson and Jim Jackson calling all of the action. The game can be heard locally on ESPN 80 AM.
