WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University heavyweight rowing team completed competition at the 28th annual George Washington Invitational, featuring some of the top collegiate competition in the country, on Friday and Saturday with a record of 6-3, finishing third overall in the point standings. After finishing closely behind Navy in Friday's opening races, Georgetown rallied to sweep all its races on Saturday against Gonzaga and Virginia.
The Hoyas' weekend started on Friday afternoon with three races against Navy. The varsity eight boat had the closest race of the day for the Blue & Gray, finishing less than two seconds behind Navy's crew, 5:49.20 to 5:47.30.
The second varsity eight finished in second place in its race, crossing the finish line in 6:04.30 while the third varsity eight placed third with a time of 6:08.40.
"I was very happy with our effort against Navy across the board," Georgetown Head Coach Luke Agnini said. "The second and third varsity crews put up a good fight and the first varsity finally had their first solid race of the season. It's the first time they have been able to put together a dynamic body of the race. The water on Friday afternoon was flat and really allowed the guys to find an aggressive rhythm."
GU turned the tables on Saturday morning, defeating Gonzaga in all three races. The second varsity crew started the day by crossing the finish line in 6:03, ahead of the Bulldogs (6:08.20). The varsity eight came out with a two-second victory in its race, finishing in 5:45.20. The third varsity boat completed the sweep with a 10-second victory, 6:10 to 6:20.21.
"I was somewhat disappointed with the Gonzaga race Saturday morning," Agnini said. "But I also know that our group is young and they aren't yet ready to put together three good races back to back to back. But I suppose I'll take having a sloppy performance and still winning."
Saturday afternoon's races were against Virginia to close out the regatta. The third varsity opened things up with its second resounding victory of the day, finishing in a time of 5:48.6 ahead of UVA's top freshman crew (5:58.00) and third varsity boat (5:58.60).
In the second varsity race, the Hoyas came out with an exciting win, 5:43.50 to 5:45.20. The varsity eight closed things out with a five-second win, 5:33.50 to 5:38.60, to give Georgetown its sixth victory of the day.
"I think the squad as a whole did a great job against UVA on Saturday," Agnini said. "The tail wind chop was very difficult water to row in. All three of our boats showed great base speed and handled the conditions a bit better than I thought they would. Even so, the varsity did try to open up against UVA, but a few bobbles and crashes left them really just holding the margin. There is still a lot to work on, but overall a great weekend for us."
Next weekend, the Hoyas travel to Lake Carnegie to race Holy Cross for their annual dual meet.
