Hoyas Shave Heads for St. Baldrick's

April 22, 2015

WASHINGTON - On Friday afternoon, members of the Georgetown University men's soccer team and staff participated in Georgetown's 6th Annual St. Baldrick's Day festivities at Leavey Center. It was the third-consecutive year that the team has shaved their heads for a cause.

More than 40 participants shaved their heads in solidarity with pediatric cancer patients often who lose their hair during treatment.

The St. Baldrick's Foundation funds childhood cancer research, in large part through their signature head shaving events. In 2015 alone, the Foundation has raised $26,663,075, which will be directed to "carefully selected research grants," according to the foundation's website.

Captain Keegan Rosenberry (Ronks, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) was one of the organizers for the Blue & Gray.

"We've been honored over the past three years to be part of such a meaningful event. Although shaving our heads can't capture what a patient goes through, we hope our participation has value to the organization and the kids as it is the least we can do."

Head shaving wasn't all that St. Baldrick's Day had to offer. The event also included a musical performance by Joseph Timpone, MD, associate dean and director of the Office of Student Research at Georgetown's School of Medicine, a bake sale, a bone marrow drive and a silent auction.

Georgetown's hospital has become an important part of the student-athlete experience for the men's soccer team.

Along with three years participating in St. Baldrick's, the team has visited with Jeffrey Toretsky, M.D., who researches Ewing sarcoma, a rare form of cancer. The squad participated in Lace-Up 4 Pedriatric Cancer in 2012 which was in in conjunction with Dr. Toretsky's research.

This spring, the team welcomed the family of a Lombardi Cancer Center patient to their practice with the Argentine National Team to meet their idols and spend the morning together.

The team has completed spring training and is preparing for finals and the end of the 2015 spring semester.
