April 27, 2015 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team held its annual banquet on Sunday to recognize the accomplishments of the 2014 squad. Head Coach Brian Wiese gave out the three major awards and announced the captains for the 2015 season.
The Most Valuable Player Award was given to sophomore defender Joshua Yaro (Santa Barbara, Calif./Cate School). The last sophomore to win the award was forward Steve Neumann in 2011.
Yaro, a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist, was named First Team All-American, First Team All-Great Lakes Region and the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Player of the Year. The BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year was also a unanimous selection to the first team. He was a key part of Georgetown's 10 shutouts this season, including a league-best six in the nine conference games played. He also got into the action on offense with an assist coming at Princeton. Yaro earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors on three occasions this past season and was a member of the Preseason All-BIG EAST squad.
Off the field, he is a member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team.
The Most Improved Player Award went to senior forward Austin Martz (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg). Martz moved into the starting lineup as a senior, starting in all 21 games he appeared in with just seven career starts in his three previous seasons. He scored four career goals, all coming in 2014, and tallied seven career assists, including three as a senior. He also had one game winner to his credit.
The forward was a difference maker off the field as well as one of the vocal leaders for the Blue & Gray. He is also a member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team.
The Ricardo Mendoza Award, given to the player who exhibits spirit, leadership and dedication, was presented to senior midfielder Tyler Rudy (Olney, Md./Sherwood).
Rudy earned Second Team All-BIG EAST honors as a senior and was a captain for the Blue & Gray. He appeared in all 23 games and was the squad's fifth-leading scorer with two goals and three assists for seven points including two game winners.
Rudy worked his way into the lineup, appearing in 88 games in his career with 71 starts. On the Hilltop, he had seven goals with 12 assists for 26 points and posted five game winners.
Off the field, he was active in the athletics department and a BIG EAST All-Academic selection. The captain was a leader in the midfield for the Blue & Gray.
He currently in his rookie season with Major League Soccer's the New England Revolution.
Looking ahead to 2015, the coaching staff announced the captains for the upcoming season. Leadership will come from the back next year as four defenders were selected by their coaches and teammates.
Yaro was named a captain along with seniors Keegan Rosenberry (Ronks, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite), Cole Seiler (Anderson, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal School) and Josh Turnley (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area). Rosenberry is a returning captain after leading the 2014 squad as well.
Rosenberry was a Third Team All-Great Lakes honoree and named to the BIG EAST Second Team for the second-consecutive season at the end of conference play. Rosenberry helped the Hoyas to 10 shutouts including a league-best six in conference games. On offense, he managed a goal at DePaul and an assist in the victory over Wisconsin. Rosenberry was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 13.
The defender has started since first stepping foot on campus, starting all 69 games he's appeared in with two goals and seven assists for 11 career points. He has been the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on two occasions and is a member of the BIG EAST All-Academic squad.
Seiler has been another stalwart in the back, playing in 66 games in three seasons with 65 starts to his credit. He has also tallied two goals, including a game-winner both coming during the 2013 season. Seiler has twice been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll and is a member of the BIG EAST All-Academic squad.
After playing sparingly as a freshman, Turnley worked his way into the rotation and has started 43 of 49 games played the past three seasons. He has five assists to his credit including two in 2014 and is a member of the BIG EAST All-Academic squad.

The Hoyas finished the 2014 season 14-4-5 on the season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals before failing to advance against Virginia.
