April 8, 2015 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team spent its Easter Monday at one of the most historic events in the Nation's Capital. The players volunteered at the 137th annual White House Easter Egg Roll in conjunction with the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition.
"Breathtaking! I will remember this experience for the rest of my life," said Dominique Vitalis (Bloomfield, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's). "I'm so glad I was blessed with this opportunity."
The team had the afternoon shift arriving after the First Family attended the event, but the crowds were still covering the South Lawn. After a brief tutorial, each player was given a station in the Eggtivity Area along with other athletes including members of DC United, the DC Divas, Washington Capitals Head Coach Barry Trotz and volunteers with the NFL's Play 60 initiative.
The Eggtivity Area included three lanes of obstacles including tunnels, speed ladders, footballs, hurdles and the opportunity to end it with a dive into the endzone. The players aided children going through as well we setting up the different obstacles for the 35,000 people who would attend the event.
Midway through the shift, players were added to the President's Court, the official outdoor court of the White House also located on the South Lawn. There, the student-athletes helped with 10-minute clinics partnering with NBA Cares and including NBA greats such as Bernie Bickerstaff and Gheorghe Muresan.
"It was a once-in-a-lifetime chance," said Logan Battle (Springfield, Va./West Springfield). "It was amazing to be able to share it with my teammates."
It was a long afternoon for the team, but with beautiful weather and the opportunity to be just steps from the White House, it was an opportunity they won't soon forget.
