Aug. 22, 2015 PARIS, France - The Georgetown women's basketball team downed the AMW All-Stars, 116-41, in an exhibition game on Saturday in Paris, France. The contest was the final of three that the Blue & Gray has played over its 10-day tour through Italy and France.
"I felt really good about the game, just about what our mission was coming here and building as a team," said Georgetown Head Coach Natasha Adair. "I'm just proud of the way our players responded and the whole experience. We experienced culture and team bonding. This is a great way for us to finish and prepare for our upcoming season."
Junior guard Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) led the way with 21 points, while sophomore guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) added 20. Senior guard Brittany Horne (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) and freshman guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) posted 16 apiece, and senior guard Logan Battle (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) rounded out those in double figures with 14.
Horne led the squad in rebounds with nine, and White had the all-around game with a double-double posting 16 points and 11 steals as well as eight boards and five assists.
The Hoyas shot 52.7 percent for the game, and 83.3 percent at the line. AMW was 25.0 percent from the field and 53.3 percent at the line. GU outrebounded the All-Stars, 54-30, and had 36 steals on 39 forced turnovers.
The Blue & Gray opened the game with a 10-0 run before the All-Stars could get on the board. Adomako and senior forward Dominique Vitalis (Bloomfield, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) were dominant in the paint early on. Midway through the first quarter, AMW cut the lead to four. However, the Hoyas staged an 18-0 run as the defense forced turnovers and everyone got out on the break to take the 27-6 lead. A late 3-pointer made it 27-9 at the end of the first.
From that point on, the Hoyas dominated the game entirely. Georgetown hit layup after layup off of turnovers at the top of the key and in the paint. GU allowed 10 points in the second half to make it 52-16 at the break.
The second half was much of the same as every available Hoya scored at least four points. The Blue & Gray kept up the defensive intensity for the remaining 20 minutes and cruised to the 116-41 victory.
Georgetown completed its trip going 2-1 with a loss to Cameroon's National Team and a victory over SMUC-Marseille.
Prior to the game, the Hoyas hosted a clinic for the younger players in the AMW system. The clinic proved that basketball is the universal language as the players ran the 25 children through drills at four different stations. There were smiles all around as both the Georgetown players and AMW kids had a blast teaching each other their respective languages and some new skills.
The clinic ended with the Hoya Saxa cheer at center court to bring a little bit of the Hilltop to Paris. Georgetown went on to win the game and a victory dinner as well as a goodbye dinner was in order.
The team got dressed up and had a typical French dinner. Before dessert, each player stood up and talked about their experience on the trip. Each speech was moving and thankful of such an opportunity.
The squad then traveled to the Eiffel Tower to finish the trip overlooking the City of Light. An elevator ride up gave the Hoyas some amazing views and a chance to reflect on the 10-day trip with the Eiffel Tower sparkling around them.
Tomorrow it will be off to the airport for the trip home before school begins in a little over a week. It was a busy 10 days, but truly the opportunity of a lifetime.
"This trip has been a great experience, it's been breathtaking," said Adomako. "We've seen things that we've never seen before. You see places in pictures and you never think you'll go there, and being there has been amazing."
