Hoyas Play VCU to 2-2 Draw

Sept. 17, 2015

Box Score

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team (2-2-2) played to a 2-2 draw against the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams (2-4-1) on Thursday evening in Richmond, Va. The Hoyas scored early, but a late goal in regulation allowed the Rams to tie it up and hold on for the tie.

VCU got the first shot of the game, but it was the Hoyas that controlled the pace with three-consecutive corner kicks midway through the first. In the 30th minute, senior defender Keegan Rosenberry (Ronks, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) forced the first save of the game and a flurry of dangerous shots.

In the 38th minute, GU finally connected as sophomore midfielder Matthew Ledder (Falls Church, Va./Gonzaga) sent the ball in, and junior forward Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) finished in front of the net to make it 1-0 for his third goal of the season.

In the final minutes of the first, the Blue & Gray continued to push with three more shots forcing a pair of saves from keeper Pierre Gardan.

Hoya freshman goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) had some action late coming up with two big saves to hold the 1-0 GU lead going into the half.

Just seven minutes into the second half, the Rams tied it up on a rebound when the first header went back into the mix.

It wasn't tied for long, however, as sophomore midfielder Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) saw the same scenario in the 60th minute. Muyl's shot was saved and went to the foot of Basuljevic who fired it back in to make it 2-1.

The momentum shifted back and forth as both Gardan and Marcinkowksi were forced to come up with saves as the minutes ticked by. GU's best chance to take the two-goal lead came in the 75th minute when senior midfielder David Witkoff (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) hit the post.

Late in the half, the Hoya defense was packed in holding on as VCU was looking for any opportunity to shoot. In the 87th minute, a pass was threaded through the Hoya box and to Dakota Barnathan who finished in the back of the net to tie it up with less than three minutes left in regulation to send the game into overtime.

In the first overtime, GU had the only attempt as junior forward Brett Campbell's (Wallingford, Pa./The Haverford School) shot went wide and the game began to get more physical.

The Hoyas had chances in the final 10 minutes, but never managed one on target to result in the 2-2 final.

The Blue & Gray outshot VCU, 20-13, and took seven corner kicks to the Rams' three. Both keepers tallied five saves apiece for the contest.

Georgetown will continue its road trip on Sunday as the squad travels to West Virginia University for a 4 p.m., matchup. Live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
