Sept. 22, 2015 WASHINGTON - The No. 25 Georgetown University men's soccer squad will host the No. 11/13 University of Maryland Terrapins (3-1-3) on Wednesday afternoon at Shaw Field. The Hoyas are currently 3-2-2 on the season and will close out the non-conference slate against the Terps.
Georgetown used three-straight second-half goals to defeat the West Virginia University Mountaineers, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. West Virginia scored first, but the Hoyas answered with a big offensive output to pick up their third win of the season.
Georgetown outshot West Virginia, 16-3, with 10 shots on goal to WVU's one. The Hoyas took seven corner kicks in the contest, while the Mountaineers were awarded just one. Freshman JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) took the win in the net and sophomore midfielder Matthew Ledder (Falls Church, Va./Gonzaga) scored the game winner.
The Hoyas are unbeaten in their last four outings.
Ledder earned weekly honors on Monday as he helped Georgetown to a 1-0-1 week against a pair of non-conference opponents. Ledder came off the bench to register four points on the week, with two assists in a 2-2 tie against VCU and the game-winning goal at West Virginia.
Senior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph) leads the team in scoring with nine points on three goals and three assists on the season. Junior Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) has eight points on three goals and two assists, while sophomore midfielder Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac), junior forward Brett Campbell (Wallingford, Pa./The Haverford School) and Ledder round out the top five with five points for the year. Marcinkowski has been impressive in the net with 27 saves to his credit over seven games.
Maryland picked up its third-consecutive shutout with a 0-0 draw at Michigan State in Big Ten Conference action on Friday night at DeMartin Stadium. The Terps now boast five shutouts in seven outings in 2015, holding opponents to 0.57 goals per game. Cody Niedermeier notched his fourth clean sheet of the year. The junior boasted six saves on the night and has allowed just one goal in his first season at starting keeper for UMD.
The Hoyas are 1-28-1 all-time against the Terps. Last season, GU defeated Maryland, 1-0, in College Park as Allen scored the game winner in the 78th minute to notch the program's first-ever win over the Terrapins. The lone tie came during the 2012 season in the NCAA Semifinal when the teams played to a 4-4 double-overtime draw before the Hoyas advanced to the National Championship in penalty kicks. The teams have combined for an impressive nine goals over the previous two meetings.
GU is 0-19 at home all-time against the Terps with the last meeting coming during the 2009 season, a 2-1 Hoya loss.
Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m., at Shaw Field. Live stats and a webcast featuring Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser will be available through www.GUHoyas.com. Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance at www.WeAreGeorgetown.com.
