BALTIMORE - Behind a match-high 15 kills from Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas/Dawson), the Georgetown University volleyball team swept their second-consecutive match, 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-23), over Morgan State on Tuesday night. The match was played at Morgan State's Hill Field House.
Ashlie Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) was also in double figures with 11 kills while Liv King (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) added nine. Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) had six kills and totaled a team-high three blocks. Paige McKnight (Atlanta, Ga./Dunwoody) had an astounding 38 assists to go along with two kills and six digs while Kenzie Higareda (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) led the defense with a match-high 14 digs.
Three kills from Speech led the Hoyas (3-4) to a quick 7-2 lead in the first set. King also had a kill and Meghan Richard (Firestone, Colo./Niwot) added an ace to contribute to the early run. Morgan State (1-7) cut the score to 10-8, but kills from Sinnette, Williams and Somto Egbuonu (Grand Prairie, Texas/South Grand Prairie) brought GU's lead back to five, 13-8. The Lady Bears closed to within one, 17-16, but a kill from McKnight started a 4-0 run for the Hoyas, fueled by three Morgan State errors, to give the Blue & Gray a 21-16 advantage. With the score 22-20, a kill from King and two more errors by the Lady Bears gave Georgetown the 25-20 set victory.
The two teams went back-and-forth early on in the second set as two kills from Williams and Sinnette and a kill and an ace from Speech helped keep the score tied, 10-10. The Hoyas, behind King, embarked on a 4-1 run to open a 14-11 advantage. King had two kills in the run and combined with Speech for a block. Both sides traded points until, with GU leading 18-15, the Hoyas scored six-consecutive points to set up match point, 24-15. Williams had back-to-back kills to start the run before Sinnette and Speech each added one. Mariana Sullivan (Bronxville, N.Y./Chapin School) ended the run with her first-career kill. A Morgan State error eventually gave the Hoyas the 25-16 win in the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, a 5-1 run by the Blue & Gray broke a 2-2 tie and gave them a 7-3 lead. King and Sinnette each had a kill while Morgan State made three more errors. The Lady Bears, however, fought back with five-straight points of their own to take the lead, 8-7. Trailing 9-8, kills from Sinnette, Williams and King sparked a 4-0 run for the Hoyas to put them back ahead, 12-8. Morgan State again fought back, tying the score at 14. The two teams went back-and-forth until back-to-back kills from Williams broke a 23-23 deadlock, giving the Hoyas the set victory and the sweep of the match.
Georgetown will next fly out to Wisconsin for the UW-Madison Tournament where they will play Kent State on Thursday (5 p.m. ET) and Georgia on Friday (3 p.m. ET).
