Jan. 20, 2016 WASHINGTON - Fresh off of its winter rowing camp on the Potomac River, the Georgetown University men's rowing team released its schedule on Wednesday for the upcoming 2016 spring season. The schedule features a spring training trip and Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC) regular season competition culminating with the league championship race in May. The Hoyas will compete 10 times in the regular season, with the heavyweight squad racing four times and the lightweight team competing in six events.
"This year's squad features a good number of first varsity eight returners and coxswain and a deeper athlete pool than we have had recently," said Georgetown Head Coach Luke Agnini. "Some of the depth was apparent with 2nd 8 placing in the top 10 at the Head of the Charles in the Club Eight this past fall. We are hoping to build upon our winter rowing camp and the momentum we are now seeing during winter training. We are looking forward to our spring rowing camp in Florida and this year's racing schedule which begins with our annual dual against Princeton."
GU will kick off the spring with its annual spring break training trip to Florida, March 4-12. At Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, the Hoyas will train at a world-class sprint rowing and training course, competing against each other and working on perfecting their technical points and stroke rating to be more effective at the end of races. The extended training on the water will also allow Agnini and his coaching staff to put together the best possible combination for each boat.
The Blue & Gray will first race against another program on Saturday, March 26. The heavyweights will travel to Princeton for a scrimmage while the Hoya lightweights will host the Tigers on the Potomac River.
Georgetown's lightweights will stay in Washington, D.C. the following weekend, hosting the Delaware lightweight squad on Saturday, April 2.
The heavyweight crews will return to the water April 8-9 for the GW Invite, racing against several top programs in the area on the Potomac River. Last spring, the Hoyas swept their races on the second day to finish third overall behind Navy and George Washington.
The same weekend, GU's lightweight boats will compete in Boston against some of the top programs from the Northeast. On Saturday, April 9, the Blue & Gray will race against Yale and MIT before going up against Harvard on Sunday, April 10.
Both Georgetown squads will be in action on Saturday, April 16. The Hoya heavyweights will take on Holy Cross in a neutral site dual meet, racing in Princeton, N.J. The GU lightweights will travel to Annapolis for a dual meet against the Naval Academy.
The heavyweights and lightweights will both be back in Princeton the following Saturday, April 23 to close out the regular season. The GU heavyweights will race against both George Washington and Rutgers, while the lightweight crews will take on the host Tigers as well as Penn.
The postseason begins with the EARC Sprints Championship on Sunday, May 15 at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. The EARC Sprints serve as a qualification opportunity for the squads to compete at the IRA National Championships, June 3-5, at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey.
