WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's men's soccer squad (5-8-1, 2-3-1 BIG EAST) used an early goal to get the 1-0 victory over the St. John's Red Storm (6-4-4, 2-2-2 BIG EAST) in a windy BIG EAST Conference matchup at Shaw Field on Saturday. The win leaves the Blue & Gray in contention for a BIG EAST Championship berth.
"I thought the guys were really good understanding what we needed to do today," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "We knew the half we had the wind at our back was our opportunity to be aggressive and step high and do exactly what we did. The best way to handle a day like today is to get the ball on the ground and I think they did a really good job of that."
Less than five minutes into the game, the Hoyas looked good with two solid chances. Freshman forward Achara (Enugu, Nigeria/Berkshire School [Mass.]) had a shot go wide, and then a giveaway by the SJU keeper gave junior forward Zach Knudson (Oakland, N.J./DePaul Catholic) a wide open shot that went just right.
The momentum stayed with the Blue & Gray, and paid off in the eighth minute. Knudson took the ball to the endline on the left side. He sent it back into the box to an open Brett Campbell (Wallingford, Pa./Haverford). The senior finished into the right corner of the net to make it, 1-0.
The Hoyas continued to dominate possession while a Lema free kick and an open shot by Achara were both saved by SJU keeper Andrew Withers. The play continued in Georgetown's favor and the GU defense was never really tested as the wind kept the ball on one end of the field.
The Blue & Gray went into the break leading, 1-0.
The first look of the second half was a header from Achara that went just left after a perfect serve from Knudson. The play continued in GU's favor as the squad had looks but couldn't find the insurance goal.
In the final 10 minutes of play, St. John's began to pressure and had a few balls whipped into the box that were defended to maintain the lead.
In the 88th minute, the Red Storm had a free kick just outside the box giving the squad their best chance of the afternoon. Harry Cooksley took an impressive shot through the defense, but the ball went just wide of the post.
In the final minute, there was one more foul giving SJU another golden opportunity. The wall blocked the shot, but the second shot was sent back in. A scrum in the middle of the box ensued, but the linesman had held up the offsides flag early in the play giving the Hoyas possession and securing the 1-0 victory.
The Hoyas outshot the Red Storm, 21-12, marking Georgetown's largest shot total of the season. GU also took seven corner kicks to St. John's three. Sophomore goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) tallied his third shutout of the season with three saves in the game, while Withers took the loss with six saves on the afternoon.
The Hoyas will be back in action on Wednesday as the squad travels to South Orange, N.J., to take on the Seton Hall Pirates at 7 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network, and live stats will also be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
