Hoyas Fall to Marquette in BIG EAST Action

Oct. 29, 2016

Final Stats

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (16-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-18) decision to visiting Marquette in BIG EAST action on Saturday night. The Hoyas fall to 6-19 overall and 2-10 in league play.

Paige McKnight (Atlanta, Ga./Dunwoody) recorded her second double-double in as many matches, her 11th of the season, with 32 assists and 14 digs. She added four kills, two blocks and a pair of service aces as well. Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) notched a double-double as well, her seventh, leading the Hoyas with a match-high 13 kills to go with 11 digs.

Rounding out the GU offense, Liv King (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) tallied nine kills, Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) added seven and both Ashlie Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) and Megan Richard (Firestone, Colo./Niwot/Seattle) contributed to the Blue & Gray's offense with five apiece.

"I loved the energy we played with tonight," Head Coach Arlisa Williams said. "We came out with such high energy in the first set and one of the things I enjoyed the most about coaching tonight with this group is that they continued to sustain that energy. They fought so hard, communicated well and I'm proud of them for that."

Georgetown put together another fantastic start to a match with an impressive performance in the first set. Trading points early, the Hoyas went on an 8-2 run to take a 12-9 lead and force a Marquette (20-5, 10-3 BIG EAST) timeout. Coming out of the break, GU kept its momentum going with another 5-2 run to cause the Golden Eagles to burn their final timeout at 17-11. Georgetown continued its strong start, boasting runs of 3-0 and 3-1 down the stretch, to claim the opening frame 25-16.

Another competitive set saw nine total ties and lead changes in the second stanza. Battling back-and-forth early, Marquette used a 5-0 run to take the lead at 11-9 and force a Georgetown timeout. The Hoyas would keep pace but were unable to knot things up again in the frame en route to a 25-18 setback.

In the third, 11 more ties and lead changes highlighted a set that could have gone either way. Tied at 11-11, the Golden Eagles took control of the stanza and led by six points at both 21-15 and 23-17. Not willing to concede, the Hoyas rallied back to pull within a pair at 23-21 but could not complete the comeback in the 25-21 loss.

Marquette jumped out to an early lead in the fourth set at 5-0 for a Georgetown timeout. The Golden Eagles kept their advantage going, leading by as many as 10 at 18-8, but the hard-fighting Hoyas kept chipping away at the deficit to the very end. Despite winning 10 of the final 17 points, GU didn't have enough in the tank to close things out in the 25-18 set loss.

Jenna Rosenthal, Taylor Louis and Allie Barber all led Marquette with 11 kills. Lauren Houg recorded a match-high 15 digs for the Golden Eagles.

Georgetown returns to action with a road swing next weekend at Seton Hall and St. John's. The Hoyas travel to South Orange, N.J., to face the Pirates on Friday, Nov. 4, before battling the Red Storm in Queens, N.Y. on Saturday, Nov. 5.
