Hoya Volleyball Falls to BIG EAST Leader Creighton

Oct. 8, 2016

Final Stats

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-17) decision to visiting Creighton in BIG EAST action on Saturday night. The Hoyas fall to 6-14 overall and 2-5 in league play.

Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) led the Hoyas with eight kills while Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) added seven and Liv King (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) chipped in six. Speech hit at a .421 clip and did not commit a hitting error in the match.

Defensively, Paige McKnight (Atlanta, Ga./Dunwoody) and Kenzie Higareda (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) hauled in eight digs each while Ashlie Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) was credited with three blocks, including two solo rejections.

"We had moments tonight where we were not only playing with, but pushing, the best team in the conference," Head Coach Arlisa Williams said. "We did some great things in this match that show us if we can stay consistent, we can play with the best team in the conference and one of the best teams in the country."

A back-and-forth opening set saw Creighton (12-6, 6-0 BIG EAST) take a 3-1 lead before the Blue & Gray put together a 4-1 run to lead 5-4. The Bluejays responded with a 6-0 run to force a Hoya timeout and eventually pushed their lead to as many as six points, up 15-9. Not backing down, Georgetown began to mount a comeback and slowly chipped away at the CU lead until a 3-0 run, capped by a Williams solo block, cut the Creighton lead to 18-16. Coming out of a timeout, the Bluejays finished off the set with a 7-2 run to win the frame 25-18.

A slow start for the Hoyas in the second set led to a 15-8 lead from Creighton. After a GU timeout, two separate 4-1 runs by Georgetown put the home team right back into the set, down just three points at 19-16. Back-to-back points from CU forced another Hoya timeout, and the Bluejays once again closed the set out on a strong run to win the stanza 25-18.

The third set saw yet another strong fight from the start between both squads. Trading leads early, a 3-0 run from Creighton gave the visitors some breathing room until a Speech kill brought the Hoyas within two, down 11-9. A 6-2 run from the Bluejays, followed by a 7-2 push, forced GU to use both timeouts and face a 21-14 deficit. Creighton would win four of the next seven points to take the set 25-17 and win the match.

Taryn Kloth led Creighton with nine kills while Marysa Wilkinson and Lauren Smith each added seven. Brittany Witt collected a match-high 16 digs for the Bluejays.

Georgetown closes out the first half of its BIG EAST schedule next weekend. The Hoyas are away once again for another Midwest road swing with matches against Xavier on Friday, Oct. 14, at 6 p.m., in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Butler on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 6 p.m., in Indianapolis, Ind.
