Georgetown Drops Five Set Heartbreaker to Butler

Nov. 12, 2016

Final Stats

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's volleyball team lost a hard-fought 3-2 (25-20, 24-26, 26-24, 22-25, 15-6) thriller to visiting Butler in BIG EAST action on Saturday afternoon. The Hoyas fall to 6-22 overall and 2-13 in league play.

"There were moments that we played some really good volleyball today," Head Coach Arlisa Williams said. "We played with a whole lot of grit and played in-system, making a lot of good runs which was awesome to see."

Four Hoyas posted double-figure kills, led by Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) with a match-high 23. Liv King (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) added 19, Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) had 14 and Ashlie Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) chipped in 10.

Paige McKnight (Atlanta, Ga./Dunwoody) earned her 13th double-double of the season with a match-high 55 assists to go with 11 digs. Kenzie Higareda (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) led all players with 22 digs while Sara Feld (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) hauled in a career-high 17 digs and Caitlin Brauneis (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) added 11.

A close first half turned to Butler's advantage midway through to force a GU timeout, down 17-12. Coming out of the huddle, the Hoyas went on a 6-2 run to pull within one but the Bulldogs scored five of the final six points in the frame to seal the 25-20 victory.

In the second, Georgetown opened the set on a 4-0 run before BU rallied back to knot things up at 8-8. A subsequent 4-0 run from the Blue & Gray regained the lead for the Hoyas, one they wouldn't relinquish, en route to the 26-24 win.

Flipping the script in the third, Butler (18-13, 7-8 BIG EAST) opened up with a 4-0 lead of its own and pushed to a 10-5 advantage. Georgetown would chip away at the deficit from there, eventually tying things up at 15-15. Keeping things close the rest of the way, GU fought off a set point at 24-23 to extend the set but couldn't complete the comeback in the 26-24 setback.

King was almost unstoppable for Georgetown in the fourth set. The sophomore outside hitter tallied nine kills on 14 swings without committing an attack error for a stellar .643 attack percentage. As a team, the Hoyas racked up 21 kills to out-do what would otherwise have been a strong frame from Butler with 16 kills and just two errors.

Playing in their second five-setter in as many contests, the Hoyas didn't have enough in the tank to close out the victory. Butler led 8-4 at the switch and closed out the frame with a 7-2 run to seal the match.

Anna Logan led Butler with 21 kills to go with 15 digs for a double-double. Whitney Beck also posted a double-double with 19 kills and 12 digs while three other Bulldogs hauled in double-digit digs as well.

Georgetown returns to action on Sunday against Xavier in the 2016 home finale. The matchup against the Musketeers will also be Senior Day for a pair of Hoyas as GU will celebrate the careers of Brauneis and Williams, bidding the seniors farewell in their final home contests of their careers. First serve is set for 1 p.m., and live stats and a subscription-based webstream will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
