Georgetown Falls to Xavier on Senior Day

Nov. 13, 2016

Final Stats

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's volleyball team wrapped up its 2016 home schedule with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-18) loss to visiting Xavier in BIG EAST action on Sunday afternoon. The Hoyas fall to 6-23 overall and 2-14 overall.

"We were streaky today," Head Coach Arlisa Williams said. "There were times when we were doing things extremely well and then we had the flip side of that and couldn't capitalize consistently enough. We've demonstrated that we have all the pieces. We just need to show that we can put it together as a whole for one last weekend."

The match was the final contest on the Hilltop for seniors Caitlin Brauneis (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) and Ashlie Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount). The duo made the most of their last match in McDonough Arena, as Williams shared the team lead with seven kills and Brauneis collected five digs for the Hoyas.

"Caitlin and Ashlie have been through a whole lot with this program," Williams said. "They came in super excited to help us build and remained excited to leave a legacy and to be better. Those are two players that persevere and come in everyday and put forth the effort. We're going to miss their experience for sure."

Liv King (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) and Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) both tallied seven kills to join Williams for the GU lead. Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) added six.

Defensively, Kenzie Higareda (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) paced the Blue & Gray with 10 digs. The double-digit total, her 24th of the season, puts her at 979 in her career. She is just 21 digs shy of becoming the 10th player in program history to reach 1,000 career digs.

King notched four of her kills in the opening set without committing an attack error. Trading leads early, Xavier used runs of 9-3 and 6-2 to open things up and win the frame 25-13.

The Hoyas put together their best offensive showing in the second set, collecting 11 total kills and hitting at a .214 clip. Speech tallied all six of her kills in the stanza while Higareda hauled in five digs. A hard-fought set, the frame saw six ties and four lead changes including a 19-19 draw late. The Musketeers would then score six of the last eight points to claim the 25-21 victory.

In the third, Williams and Sinnette both had three kills with just one attack error combined between them. Xavier opened the set on a 4-0 run before the Hoyas rallied back to knot things up at 9-9. The Musketeers pulled away courtesy of a 7-1 run to force a GU timeout at 20-13 and the Blue & Gray wasn't able to make up any ground down the stretch en route to the 25-18 loss.

Abbey Bessler led Xavier (17-12, 11-5 BIG EAST) with a match-high 10 kills. Meredith Klare paced the Musketeers with 13 digs.

Georgetown returns to action on Friday, Nov. 18, as it travels to face BIG EAST Regular Season Champion Creighton before closing out the season at Providence on Sunday, Nov. 20. Friday's match against the Bluejays will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
