WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (1-1) fell to the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers (2-0), 68-60, at Williams Arena in Minneapolis, Minn., on Friday afternoon. Junior guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) and senior guard Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) both managed double-doubles, but the Hoyas' late comeback fell short in the loss.
"On the road against a good team, I was proud of our effort. We're learning and our goal is still in view," said Georgetown Head Coach Natasha Adair. "This is a long road swing and we'll take what we learned today, and keep trying to put a complete 40-minute game together."
Sophomore guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) led the Hoyas with 18 points. She also had a team-best four assists and five steals. Adomako posted 17 points and 11 rebounds as well as a team-best four assists, while Woodard rounded out those in double figures with 15 points and a squad-high 12 rebounds. Woodard also managed three blocks, three assists and one steal.
The Hoyas pulled down 49 boards and shot 37.1 percent (26-of-70) from the field, while the Gophers shot 39.0 percent (25-for-39) from the field and managed 33 rebounds. The difference came as Georgetown committed 21 turnovers and forced just 15 by Minnesota.
Defense was the key in the first quarter as a pair of steals from White gave GU momentum midway through the stanza. The Hoyas were also hot from outside as Adomako and and White hit back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 12-4.
Minnesota fought back and cut the lead to one, 14-13, as the first quarter concluded.
White sank a trey to open the second quarter, but the Gophers answered back. On the other end, it was an Adomako 3-pointer that gave GU the lead back, 20-18, but once again Minnesota retorted with another from long range.
Late in the half, the Minnesota defense picked it up and held the Blue & Gray before staging a 13-4 run over the final 5:56. At the half, the Hoyas trailed 36-26.
The Gophers scored the first four points on the second half to take a 14-point lead, before Georgetown staged an 8-0 run sparked by a trey from Adomako to cut it back to six, 40-34. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Hoyas would come as Minnesota came roaring back to lead 57-40 at the end of the third.
Despite the deficit, the Hoyas were fired up in the fourth as GU opened with a 6-0 run, all layups in transition. Following a Gopher timeout, two more big stops and an Adomako put-back cut the lead under 10, 57-48. Woodard's offensive rebound and tip-in made it 57-50, but the Gopher's ended the run with a trey at the six-minute mark. In total, GU opened the quarter with a 10-0 run.
Woodard continued to be the spark as her 3-pointer cut it to eight, 63-55. A trey from White at the end of the 30-second clock made the score 65-58 as the Hoyas battled back. A White jumper made it a five-point game with a minute left, but time just ran out for the Blue & Gray and GU was forced to foul.
At the final horn, Georgetown fell, 68-60.
The contest marked GU's second away game of a seven-game road swing.
Georgetown will be back in action on Tuesday as the squad travels to Miami, Fla., to take on Florida International University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
