Georgetown University's volleyball team wrapped up its 2016 campaign in winning fashion, defeating Providence 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-23) in BIG EAST action on Sunday afternoon. The Hoyas complete the season sweep against the Friars and finish the season 7-24 overall and 3-15 in league play.
Kenzie Higareda (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) collected a match-high 17 digs to put her over the 1,000 dig milestone in her two seasons on the Hilltop. Now with 1,009 career digs, she is just the 10th player in program history to achieve the feat.
Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) led the Hoyas with a match-high 15 kills while Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) added 13 and Ashlie Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) chipped in eight. Speech did not commit a hitting error in her 27 swings for a stellar .556 attack percentage.
Paige McKnight (Atlanta, Ga./Dunwoody) paced the GU offense with 37 assists and, along with Caitlin Brauneis (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) and Sara Feld (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa), recorded two service aces on the day.
Defensively, Brauneis joined Higared in double digit digs with 13. Speech tallied three blocks at the net and both McKnight and Williams added a pair of rejections as well.
A back-and-forth start to the opening set saw a 3-3 draw before Providence (13-21, 1-17 BIG EAST) used a 7-1 run to force a Hoya timeout. Coming out of the huddle, the Blue & Gray battled back and slowly began to chip away at their host's lead. Trailing 16-14, the Friars called a timeout to regroup but GU would eventually knot things up again at 20-20. Keeping pace, both teams would push the tie to 23-23 before the Hoyas closed out the frame's final two points for the 25-23 win.
In the second, the two teams combined for six ties and six lead changes en route to an even 20-20 score. Three-straight points put the Hoyas in the driver's seat and the Blue & Gray eventually had a trio of set points to work with up 24-21. Providence would come as close as possible, but a kill from Speech silenced any comeback attempt from the Friars and sealed the 25-23 win for Georgetown.
The Hoyas took the early advantage in the third set, jumping out to a 6-2 lead. Not giving up, Providence rallied back and eventually tied things up at 19-19. Although they would keep it close, the Friars never managed to retake a lead as GU once again closed out the frame, and the match, on a kill from Speech.
Kayla Fitzgerald led Providence with 12 kills and 12 digs for a double-double.
