Nov. 23, 2016 WASHINGTON - Georgetown University volleyball's sophomore Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) was named All-BIG EAST Second Team, as announced by the league office on Wednesday. She is the first Hoya to garner all-conference honors since 2014 and is the sixth player to achieve the feat under the watch of Head Coach Arlisa Williams.
Voting was conducted by the league's head coaches and coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players. The Volleyball All-BIG EAST teams are non-positional.
Speech started all 31 matches for the Hoyas, averaging 2.95 kills per set while hitting at a .327 clip. She finished the 2016 regular season ranked eighth overall in the BIG EAST in hitting percentage and was 12th in kills.
Along with her offensive prowess, Speech also averaged 0.77 blocks per set and 0.56 digs per set on the defensive side.
On the year, Speech recorded double-figure kills in 18 matches including a season-high 20 in a win against Southern Utah. She hit at least .400 in a match 11 different times and more than than .500 five times. Her best hitting performance was a .579 percentage with 13 kills on 19 swings against Maryland at the Georgetown Classic.
Defensively, Speech was credited with at least five blocks on eight different occasions, including six against both American and Seton Hall.
Speech received plenty of recognition for her accomplishments on the court. She was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Denver Invitational and was selected for the BIG EAST Honor Roll three different times on Sept. 19, Sept. 26, and Nov. 21.
Georgetown ended the 2016 campaign with a 7-24 overall record and a 3-15 mark in league play. The Hoyas graduate just two seniors and return 14 letterwinners for 2017, including Speech.
