DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (4-2) downed the Penn State Lady Lions (4-2), 68-54, at the 2016 San Juan Shootout held in Dayton Beach, Fla., at the Ocean Center on Friday. The win was GU's third in a row and made the Hoyas 2-0 at the tournament.

"Today we took a huge step forward and we did it together, there's no one person, and that's the beauty of this team," said Head Coach Natasha Adair. "We just fought, on the road, and I saw my team grow. From the tip, they had that fire in their eyes and at no point were they on their heels. It's a win for the team, but it's a win for Georgetown."

Sophomore guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) led the way for the Hoyas with 21 points, including four 3-pointers, and five steals. Junior guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) managed 15 points, and senior guard Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) rounded out the Hoyas in double figures tallying 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Adding six rebounds was sophomore center Jodi-Marie Ramil (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton).

The Hoyas pulled down 30 boards to Penn State's 31, and shot 43.1 percent (22-of-51) from the field, while the Lady Lions shot 39.6 percent (19-for-48) from the field. Georgetown forced 18 turnovers on 12 steals and committed just 12 turnovers as a team. Georgetown was an impressive 17-of-19 from the line to shoot 89.5 percent.

The Hoyas were sharp in the opening minutes as the offense started with an 8-0 run, and the defense came up with stops and rebounds. The squad held the Lady Lions scoreless for the first 4:32 of the contest.

Penn State came back, but the Blue & Gray continued to run the floor and get buckets to make it 15-11 in favor of the Hoyas at the end of the first quarter.

The Hoyas cooled off a bit in the second quarter, but managed to hold the Lady Lions at bay with defensive pressure and good looks inside.

A 3-pointer from PSU gave them the lead, 18-17, at the 6:41 mark. However, White sank back-to-back treys to answer right back and regain the lead for the Hoyas. Down the stretch, Penn State managed to come back and took a late lead to put the Blue & Gray down, 29-27, at the half.

Penn State built the lead up to eight with a run to open the second half forcing a Georgetown timeout.

The Hoyas regrouped and a free throw from Woodard sparked a 10-0 run that included a trey by Adomako and a steal and layup from White to give the Blue & Gray the 39-37 advantage. It was a 16-2 run to end the quarter that had three steals including back-to-back takeaways from senior guard Jade Martin (Bloomington, Minn./John F. Kennedy) and White. A foul at the buzzer gave the Lady Lions three free throw attempts making it 45-41 in favor of the Blue & Gray at the end of the quarter.

It was a back-and-forth battle throughout the final quarter as the Hoyas clung to a small lead. Junior guard DiDi Burton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College Prep) came up with a pair of big shots including a three to make it 52-47, but the Lady Lions came back with a trey of their own.

Woodard began to get aggressive on offense and sank four-consecutive free throws to put GU ahead by six, 56-50. White then took a charge and Adomako hit four more from the charity stripe to make it eight-straight on free throws.

Defense truly won the game as big stops turned to points on the other end. As the time ticked away, White put on a show with a fadeaway trey and GU cruised to the 68-54 team victory.

"No one person had this victory," said Adair. "Jodi (Ramil) hadn't played a lot of minutes before today, but we told everyone on the team that their role and their presence matters and to be ready and she was."

The matchup marked GU's second neutral game of a seven-game road swing, and the final of the tournament. The tournament was scheduled to be play in P.R., but moved to Daytona Beach due to concerns with Zika.

Georgetown will travel to Towson University on Wednesday for a noon matchup against the Tigers. Live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
