Nov. 6, 2016 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's tennis team closed out the fall season at the Navy Invitational this past weekend. Junior Mac Rechan (Clayton, Mo./Clayton) and freshman Ian Witmer (North Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) both won their flights, and the pair of Witmer and sophomore Michael Chen (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel High School) won a doubles flight for the squad to end the fall on a high note.
Rechan went 3-0 at No. 4 singles to take the flight. He defeated Matthew Lee from Navy, 6-2, 6-1 and then beat Max Olson from Air Force by a score of 6-1, 7-6. Rechan rounded it out with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win over George Mason's Jakob Nielsen to get the victory in the flight.
Witmer went 2-1 at No. 6 singles but, despite tying two other players, was named the champion due to the tiebreaking procedure with his +1 advantage in sets. Witmer defeated Navy's Ian Landwehr 6-2, 6-1, and then beat Allen Thornes from Fordham by a score of 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. His lone loss was a three-set battle against Daniel Gutierrez from George Mason (6-4, 0-6, 6-3).
Other notable singles performances included a 2-1 record for junior Marco Lam (Hong Kong, China/Diocesan Boys' School). He did not get the No. 2 singles crown, however, after falling in the head-to-head matchup with eventual champ Tim Steirle from Saint Joseph's.
In doubles play, the pair of Witmer and Chen were the lone Hoya flight champions taking the No. 3 crown. The pair went 2-0 overall and tied for the title, but won the head-to-head matchup over a duo from George Mason. Witmer and Chen managed an 8-1 victory over a team from Navy, and the 8-6 win over the pair of Patriots.
The Hoyas will open spring play at Drexel University on January 27, 2017.
