WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (7-2) returned home and continued its winning ways with a 69-56 victory over the George Mason University Patriots (5-5) on Thursday evening at McDonough Arena. It was GU's first home game since Nov. 11, and Georgetown's sixth victory in a row.
"It felt great to be back home and to be on our own court. We're 2-0 at home, and that's one of our goals especially going into BIG EAST play," said Georgetown Head Coach Natasha Adair.
Junior guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) led the way for the Hoyas, tying her career high with 25 points and posting eight rebounds. Senior forward Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) managed her fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 boards. Both Adomako and Woodard went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. Rounding out those in double figures was sophomore guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill), who scored 14 points and have five assists.
The Blue & Gray pulled down 43 rebounds to George Mason's 36, and shot 41.5 percent (27-of-65) from the field, while the Patriots shot 35.0 percent (21-for-60) from the field. Georgetown forced 16 turnovers on nine steals, but committed 17 turnovers in the contest.
The Hoyas went down in the opening minute, but staged a 17-2 run on 14 points off of turnovers and six in transition. Mason hit a jumper with two minutes remaining in the quarter, but a trey from senior guard Mykia Jones (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook [Wake Forest]) answered right back to make it 21-10 in favor of the Blue & Gray. A mismatch gave Adomako a three-point play, and the Hoyas ended the period leading 24-12.
The Patriots scored first in the second quarter, but GU answered with treys from Woodard and White. Georgetown mixed up its lineup, but continued to find a way to score as the squad built the lead up by as much as 16. A last-second 3-pointer from senior guard Jade Martin (Bloomington, Minn./John F. Kennedy) made it 35-20 at the half.
The second half started like the first as Mason struck first, but Adomako converted the three-point play on the other end. The Patriots gained momentum cutting it to 11 on two different occasions. White slashed through the lane to make it 43-30, and then the defense caused a turnover on the other end as the Hoyas held GMU at bay. That was as close as Mason would come as the Hoyas always managed to come up with an answer. Georgetown ended the third quarter leading, 53-39.
The Patriots would not go away in the fourth as they tried to mount a comeback. With Georgetown leading by 19, Mason staged an 11-0 run over a two-minute span to pull within eight, 60-52. A layup from Woodard ended the run and that would be as close as George Mason would get as the Blue & Gray held on in the final minutes for the 69-56 victory.
The win was a milestone for the program under Adair. The last time a Hoya team has won six in a row was the 2011-12 season, and it is the first time since she took the helm.
Georgetown will close out its nonconference schedule on Sunday as the squad hosts the University of Alabama at 2 p.m., at McDonough Arena. Links to live stats and a video stream can be found in the schedule on www.GUHoyas.com.
