No. 1 Georgetown Sailing Captures MAISA Team Race Championship

April 12, 2016

WASHINGTON - The No. 1 Georgetown sailing team continued its winning streak as the team captured the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) Team Race Championships last weekend at Old Dominion University. The Hoyas are ranked No. 1 in both the Sailing World and Sail1Design.com collegiate polls.

The GU coed sailing team has been on quite the winning streak with victories at all the major interconference regattas this spring. Over the weekend the Hoyas faced off against the top eight teams in the MAISA Conference. The regatta was sailed at Old Dominion University as the forecast called for extreme winds on Saturday. When the teams arrived on Saturday morning, they were greeted with sustained 30 mph winds that increased throughout the day. Teams waited for the winds to slow down but the regatta was called off until Sunday.

On Sunday, the winds were 8-10 mph and conditions were ideal for racing. The Hoyas started off strong defeating Navy, Hobart and George Washington before a tough loss to St. Mary's College. The regrouped and went on a 10-0 run to force a winner-take-all race with St. Mary's. The race started at 7 p.m. and the Hoyas took control early and never gave up the lead. The win capped a tremendous regular season, which saw the Hoyas win at every major college regatta. Their overall race record for the season is 115-21, the best ever for a Georgetown team.

The Blue & Gray won the 2016 MAISA Team Race Championship and now move on to the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) national championships in San Diego on May 28-30.

The Georgetown University sailing team will now switch its focus to the women's and coed fleet racing where the Hoyas have conference championships on April 23-24 and April 30-May 1, respectively. The Hoya women are currently ranked No. 4 in the country.
