April 28, 2016 WASHINGTON - Senior Mary Kate Mezzetti (Hyannis, Mass./Barnstable) was named the MAISA Women's Sailor of the Year, following the MAISA Women's Conference Championships last weekend in Geneva, N.Y., where the Hoyas took second place to earn a berth to the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) women's national championships in May. Additionally, the Georgetown University sailing team named three sailors to the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) all-conference team.
Mezzetti and sophomore Rosie Edwards (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius College Prep) were both named to the All-MAISA First Team while freshman Haddon Hughes (Houston, Texas/Episcopal High School) was named to the second team.
Mezzetti is the starting A division skipper for the Hoyas and has turned in a tremendous season thus far to earn the nod for MAISA Women's Sailor of the Year. Last fall, Mezzetti finished first at the Navy Women's Interconference Regatta, fourth at the Yale Women's Interconference Regatta and second at the MAISA Championships. During the spring season, Mezzetti finished second in the A division at the Charleston and Navy interconference regattas.
Edwards was the starting B division skipper for the Hoyas all season long and had a tremendous record. Edwards finished second at the MAISA Conference Championships and second at the Atlantic Coast Championships in the fall. Additionally, she finished sixth at the MAISA singlehanded championships. Edwards has tallied four top-five finishes in interconference competition this spring, including a second-place finish at the women's conference championships last weekend.
Hughes had a tremendous fall season, winning both the MAISA and ICSA championships in women's singlehanded sailing. Hughes transitioned to doublehanded sailing in the spring and was part of the winning team at the Arrigan Memorial Regatta last weekend.
