FRANKLIN, Tenn. - Sophomore Sam Madsen (Madison, Wis./Edgewood/Cardinal Gibbons [Fla.]) shot a 3-under par 69 and sophomore Cole Berman (Philadelphia, Pa./The Haverford School) shot a 2-under par 70 to help the Georgetown University men's golf team shoot a 1-over par 289 during the second round on Tuesday at the 2016 NCAA Franklin Regional hosted by Vanderbilt University at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.
The Hoyas remain in 10th-place in the 13 team field, two strokes behind Pepperdine, with an 8-over par 584 team score with 18 holes left to play. GU holds a three stroke advantage over UT-Martin and Michigan, while they sit 14 strokes behind eighth-place East Carolina. Texas leads the field at 37-under par 539. Virginia is second at 20-under par 556, while LSU is third at 16-under par 560.
Madsen carried his strong play from the end of the first round into the second, placing him in a tie for 25th overall at 2-under par 142 through two rounds. Madsen made eagle on the 17th-hole, before he birdied the next three midway through the round. Three consecutive bogeys on the fourth, fifth and sixth brought him back to earth, but he would birdie two of the last three holes to finish the day.
Berman started and finished the second round in strong fashion, moving him into a tie for 39th place at 1-over par 145. He jumped out quickly, shooting birdie on two of the first three holes of the round, before playing back to even. Berman finished with birdies on holes six and seven, before shooting par on the final two holes of the round to keep him at 2-under for the day.
Freshman Harrison Rhoades (Raleigh, N.C./Needham Broughton) slipped back in the second round, shooting a 4-over par 76, placing him in a tie for 49th at 3-over par 147. Sophomore Jack Musgrave (Chesterton, Ind./Andrean) improved by two strokes in the second round, shooting a 2-over par 74 to move into a tie for 63rd at 6-over par 150.
Freshman Kevin Jackson (Atlanta, Ga./The Marist School) turned in a 5-over par 77, placing him in 72nd with a 10-over par 154 through two rounds.
Final round play at the NCAA Franklin Regional begins at 9:25 a.m. EST at the Vanderbilt Legend's Club on Wednesday morning, as Georgetown will be grouped with UT-Martin and Michigan.
