CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. - The Georgetown University men's golf team captured its first BIG EAST Championship since 2010, shooting a team score of 1-over par 289 in the third and final round to clinch the victory at the par-72, 6,960 yard Callawassie Island Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon. Four Hoyas finished in the tournament's individual top 10 to help the squad qualify for the 2016 NCAA Men's Golf Championship.
The Hoyas started early on Tuesday, finishing their 3-under par 285 second round that was suspended due to inclement weather on Monday. GU followed by shooting the best team round in the field for the third consecutive day with an even-par 864 to defeat second place Xavier by 27 strokes. DePaul (+32) followed the Musketeers in third place, in front of Marquette (+34), St. John's (+35), Butler (+37), Seton Hall (+37), Villanova (+62) and Creighton (+82).
"We really have a young group, but they stayed positive throughout the tournament," said Head Coach Tommy Hunter, who clinched his third BIG EAST Title. "They had to battle through a lot. We had the weather delay at the end of the second round, but they came out strong early today. I thought that's where we won the tournament. We chipped and putted well and that's what you need to do at Callawassie."
Sophomore Sam Madsen (Madison, Wis./Edgewood [Cardinal Gibbons]) finished second overall, three strokes behind Seton Hall's Lloyd Jefferson Go, finishing with a 3-under par 213. Madsen, who led the Hoyas with a ninth place finish in 2015, turned in a pair of 2-under par 70 rounds, before finishing with a 1-over par 73 in the final round.
Sophomore Cole Berman (Philadelphia, Pa./The Haverford School) tied for third individually, finishing with a 2-under par 214 over the 54-hole tournament. Berman, a two-time All-BIG EAST selection, shot a 1-under par 71 on the tournament's final day.
Freshman Harrison Rhoades (Raleigh, N.C./Needham Broughton), who earned All-BIG EAST honors earlier in the week, finished tied for fifth with a 3-over par 219, after shooting 1-over par 73 in each round. Sophomore Jack Musgrave (Chesterton, Ind./Andrean) rounded out the Blue & Gray's four top 10 finishers, carding a 6-over par 222 for the tournament. Musgrave vaulted into the top 10 with a 1-under par 71 in the second round, before closing out with a 4-over par 76 on Tuesday.
Freshman Kevin Jackson (Atlanta, Ga./The Marist School) turned in his best round on the final day, shooting an even-par 72 to finish at 14-over par 230, good for 26th in the 45-player field.
The Hoyas jumped out to a nine-stroke lead after Sunday's first round, then turned in a 3-under par 285 when second round action finished on Tuesday morning.
The Georgetown University men's golf team's NCAA Championship destination will be determined on Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m. when the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship Selection Show is broadcast live on The Golf Channel.
