King Spends Summer Interning in New York

Aug. 10, 2016

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University women's basketball senior guard Tyshell King (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy) put good use to her time off this summer. After spending time in New York last year, King returned to the city to work four internships, hoping to gain experience that will turn into a job after graduation.

"My weeks in New York were interesting, super busy, fun, adventurous and even more fun," said King.

Two of her internships were in fashion as she worked at a boutique. She also helped a fashion designer as he tries to sell his line to giants such as Macy's Bloomingdales and Nordstrom. King has spent time in fashion before and both jobs build up her resume as she looks to break into the industry.

King used her basketball connections to spend time with The Hopey's Heart Foundation. The foundation is run by Tina Charles of the New York Liberty and was founded to prevent sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) from claiming the lives of promising student-athletes. It is committed to providing AEDs nationally for the prevention of heart and other injuries in student and amateur athletes through the provision of health education and medical equipment in schools, community and recreational centers. The Hopey's Heart Foundation is committed to improving sports safety and raising awareness of SCA throughout the country.

King worked to help promote the foundation, especially on social media. Her tasks included tweeting, retweeting, monitoring all accounts and helping set up an Instagram account for the foundation.

Finally, she assisted journalist Soledad O'Brian, working as her personal assistant. King has had a relationship with O'Brien since joining the Starfish Foundation.

The goal of the Starfish Foundation is to get scholars to, and through, college. The organization provides financial assistance, mentoring and wraparound support to help the scholars achieve their full potential. O'Brien began the organization in 2006, and King joined in 2013.

The foundation gave her many opportunities to enjoy events throughout the city. The events helped with networking, but King also attended as a representative for the foundation.

"All in all, my experience has been everything," said King. "I have definitely grown into a wise woman, and there's definitely a change in my demeanor. I am more willing to speak up and take a leadership role. I am more confident, and am a lot braver when it comes to opening up. I have learned that growth is sometimes uncomfortable and that's the great thing."

King is now back on campus taking classes as she prepares for her senior season. Last year, she appeared in 28 games with one start, averaging 2.1 ppg and 1.5 rpg. The Hoyas went 16-14, and earned a berth in the WNIT, falling in a heartbreaker at Rutgers in the first round of the tournament.
