WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer squad (1-4-0) picked up its first win of the 2016 season with a 1-0 victory over the University of Connecticut Huskies (3-2-0) on Saturday afternoon at Shaw Field. It also marked GU's first shutout of the season.

"With the heat, both teams got really tired because it's hard to run out there," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "We used more guys today, which was important and we got some really nice performances from the guys that came in."

The first good look of the game came 15 minutes in when junior midfielder Christopher Lema (Ridgefield, N.J.St. Stephen's Episcopal School) sent a ball upfield and found junior forward Zach Knudson (Oakland, N.J./DePaul Catholic [NC State]) who got inside his defender. Knudson slipped on the cross, but the ball came back and he managed a good look that was just left of the post.

Minutes later, junior midfielder Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) managed a shot at the top of the box that was deflected as the Hoyas looked dangerous on offense.

With 14 minutes left in the half, a GU turnover gave Niko Petridis a wide open shot that hit the crossbar. This gave the Huskies some life as Petridis had one more good look in the half that was saved by Georgetown keeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle). The Hoya defense was on their heels for a moment, but managed to keep UConn off of the scoreboard.

In the 40th minute, it looked as though GU would score when the ball was slipped to senior midfielder Bakie Goodman (Srarsota, Fla./Pine View School for the Gifted) at the top of the box. He sent it to senior forward Brett Campbell (Wallingford, Pa./The Haverford School) who shot from six yards out on a wide open net, but it went right to UConn keeper Scott Levene.

It all changed in the 42nd minute on a challenge from Campbell. Levene was punting the ball, but Campbell blocked the clearance and it ricocheted back into the net to give the Blue & Gray the 1-0 lead which the squad would ride into the half.

"When you've had the start of the season we've had, this is probably how the first win is going to be," said Wiese. "PJ's header would have been a great goal, Brett got in for a great chance, but the one we got was the blocked clearance. That's the sport. It wasn't the prettiest goal he'll score this year, but it could be his most important."

Georgetown had chances to get the insurance goal in the second half. In the 53rd minute, the ball was passed to Basuljevic who was charging at the net, but his shot was saved.

One of the best opportunities of the half came off of a setpiece as senior defender PJ Koscher (Bel Air, Md./Archbishop Curley) rose up above the crowd to get his head on the ball. However, Levene made a diving save to keep it a one-goal game.

Finally, it was Goodman who had the last chance for the Blue & Gray as he was deep on the right side and shot in the 77th minute, but Levene made the stop again.

UConn pressured late, but the defense managed to hold on for the shutout and get the 1-0 victory.

Georgetown outshot Connecticut, 13-10, and took seven corners to the Huskies' three. Marcinkowski was rarely tested with three saves in the game, while Levene managed six stops on the afternoon.

The Hoyas will have a quick turnaround as the squad travels to William & Mary on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. A webcast and live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
