Box Score

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer squad (1-5-0) fell, 1-0, to The College of William & Mary (5-1-0) at Albert-Daly Field on Tuesday evening. The Hoyas will open BIG EAST Conference play at Providence on Saturday.

The teams shared possession early in the game as both had chances but never looked dangerous as the minutes ticked away.

In the 19th minute, a header by junior midfielder Matt Ledder (Falls Church, Va./Gonzaga) went just wide as GU searched for the first goal of the contest. Unfortunately, that first goal came at the hands of the Tribe, as William Eskay ripped a long shot from outside the box on the left side into the back of the net to make it 1-0 in the 22nd minute.

The Blue & Gray was never able to recover in the first half as William & Mary had two more chances late that were stopped by the Hoya defense. Georgetown went into the break trailing, 1-0.

The Tribe held possession early in the second half, as the squad searched for a second score. In the 59th minute, Eskay shot again forcing GU goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) to make his first save on the evening.

As the Hoya coaching staff mixed up the lineup, the Blue & Gray began to get more dangerous trying to find the equalizer. At the same time, the game began to get very physical and a number of cards were handed out to both squads.

With 15 minutes remaining, senior midfielder Bakie Goodman (Sarasota, Fla./Pine View School for the Gifted) looked like he would be the hero with two big looks. The first was saved by goalkeeper Phil Breno as he laid out for the stop. The second was saved again and Breno came up with one more as the Hoya offense finally got going.

In the final five minutes of the contest, the Blue & Gray retained possession looking for a goal. Junior midfielder Zach Knudson (Oakland, N.J./DePaul Catholic) had an open header go just wide, and junior midfielder Arun Basuljevic's (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) shot from long range sailed just over the crossbar.

Despite the late efforts, the Hoyas couldn't find the back of the net and eventually fell, 1-0.

Georgetown was outshot, 13-11, and took five corner kicks to the Tribe's six. Macinkowski managed two saves in the loss, while Breno picked up the win with four saves for the evening.

The Hoyas will open conference play on Saturday at Providence College in a 7 p.m., matchup. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network and live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
