WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's volleyball road evened its BIG EAST Conference record with a 3-0 win over Villanova (25-19, 25-21, 25-21) on Saturday in Pennsylvania.
It was the third win in the last five matches overall for the Hoyas, who improved to 5-10 and 1-1 in the BIG EAST, while Villanova falls to 10-6 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Sophomore Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) led the way for the Hoyas with 14 kills, five blocks and two digs, while sophomore Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) added 10 kills and 10 digs and Liv King (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) had 11 kills and one dig.
The Hoyas hit .291 as a team, with Speech hitting .407 and senior Ashlie Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) hitting .429.
In the first set, the Hoyas broke a 9-all tie with a 7-1 run and took a 16-10 lead after kills from sophomore Paige McKnight (Atlanta, Ga./Dunwoody) and Speech. The lead grew to eight points, 20-12, after a kill from McKnight and a Williams block. Villanova pulled to within five points (24-19), but a kill from Speech closed out the set.
The teams traded points back and forth through the start of the second set before breaking a 10-all tie with a 7-3 run to open a 17-13 lead after a pair of kills from Sinnette. The Wildcats scored five-straight points to take an 18-17 lead, but the Blue & Gray fought back to tie the game at 20-all. GU closed out the second set with five of the final six points and closed out the set, 25-21.
The Hoyas jumped out to an early lead in the third set and never trailed. Georgetown took a 4-0 lead after a pair of kills from King and a combined block from King and Speech. Villanova pulled to within one point, 9-8, but Georgetown extended the lead back to four points after a block and a kill from Williams, making it 13-9. The Wildcats again pulled to within one point, 14-13, but kills from Speech and Sinnette helped extend the margin to 20-15. Three-straight kills from King closed out the set, and the win, for the Hoyas.
Georgetown returns back home on Tuesday, Sept. 27, hosting Seton Hall in a BIG EAST Conference match. The game will be played at the University of the District of Columbia at 6 p.m.
