WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team fell to the Xavier University Musketeers (4-2-2, 2-0-0 BIG EAST), 2-0, at Shaw Field in a BIG EAST Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 1-1 in conference play and 2-6 overall.
"It's frustrating because you're playing a really good Xavier team that is one of the favorites to win the league and you're playing fine," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "We didn't generate a lot in the first half, but it was a tight game. We came out with a mentality to get into an attacking position in the second half which is something we can take out of the game as a positive."
The Hoyas had the first look of the game as a shot from senior midfielder Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) was saved by keeper Colin Hanley.
A free kick from 35 yards out hit by Basuljevic in the 28th minute was the most dangerous look to that point as Hanley misjudged the shot and managed to get a glove on it to tip it into the crossbar. The ball ricocheted out to sophomore defender Brendan McDonough (Matthews, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) whose header was wide.
Xavier answered with a good look that was cleared by sophomore defender Peter Schropp (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) to keep the game scoreless.
The contest changed in the 34th minute when Majed Osman attacked the goal and forced Marcinkowski to come out of the box. Covered by a defender, he found Jalen Brown streaking down the left side who took one touch and shot it into the open right corner to make it 1-0.
The Musketeers would pack it in making it difficult for the Georgetown offense as the Hoyas went into the break trailing, 1-0.
The Hoyas came out fired up in the second half as a scramble in front of the goal gave both senior midfielder Bakie Goodman (Sarasota, Fla./Pine View School for the Gifted) and senior forward Brett Campbell (Wallingford, Pa./The Haverford School) an opportunity, but Hanley fell on the ball to save it. Minutes later, Basuljevic had a clean shot from the top of the box that had Hanley beat but sailed just right of the post.
GU kept creating chances as a tap to Campbell was saved with Hanley's glove.
Xavier scored the insurance goal on a counter in the 68th minute. Brown and Matt Nance created a 2v1 on the left side off of a throw in. The ball was slid to Matt Vasquenza who was charging at the right post and managed to send it in to make it 2-0 in favor of the Musketeers.
From that point on, Georgetown just couldn't find the back of the net as the moments ticked away and the Hoyas eventually fell, 2-0.
The Blue & Gray outshot Xavier, 14-10, and the Hoyas took just one corner kick to the Musketeers' two. Hanley took the win in the net with six saves, while sophomore goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) took the loss making four stops in the game.
The Hoyas will have a midweek tilt hosting local rival, American University, on Tuesday at Shaw Field. Kickoff at Shaw Field is scheduled for 3 p.m. Live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
