Georgetown Hosts American in Midweek Contest

Sept. 26, 2016

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer squad (2-6-0) will host the American University Eagles (4-2-3) on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Shaw Field in a local nonconference clash. The contest will be broadcast live on www.GUHoyas.com with Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser calling the action.

On Saturday, GU fell to the Xavier University Musketeers, 2-0, at Shaw Field in a BIG EAST matchup. Georgetown had chances, but an XU goal in the 34th minute and another in the 68th minute were too much to overcome. The Blue & Gray outshot Xavier, 14-10, and the Hoyas took just one corner kick to the Musketeers' two.

Leading the scoring for the Hoyas is senior forward Brett Campbell (Wallingford, Pa./The Haverford School) with four points on two goals, both game winners, on the season. Freshman forward Achara (Enugu, Nigeria/Berkshire School [Mass.]) is second with two points for the year. Freshman forward Davey Mason (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman), junior midfielder Christopher Lema (Ridgefield, N.J./St. Stephen's Episcopal School) and junior midfielder Matt Ledder (Falls Church, Va./Gonzaga) all have one point apiece on the season, respectively.

Sophomore goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) has been solid in the net with 41 saves in eight games, two shutouts and a 1.00 GAA.

The Eagles managed a 3-0 win over Colgate to begin Patriot League play on Saturday. Joe Iraola scored twice in the contest and added an assist on the second goal of the game by Jake Garcia. Lucas Belanger picked up his first collegiate shutout, making six saves. The two goals pushed Iraola into the team lead with 11 points (4G, 3A) on the season, and into a three-way tie for second in the Patriot League.

The Hoyas are 24-29-3 all-time against the Eagles in the longest rivalry in program history. The squad is 14-18-2 at home against American. Georgetown has won the past three meetings, but the squads have not played since 2013. That year, GU won by a score of 1-0 on the road. The last home meeting was a 2-1 Georgetown victory in 2011.

Kickoff at Shaw Field is scheduled for 3 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets online or at the gate.

Live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
