WASHINGTON - Senior quarterback Tim Barnes (Oradell, N.J./River Dell Regional) threw for career highs of 221 yards and four touchdowns, leading the Georgetown University football team to a season-opening 38-14 victory over Davidson College on Saturday afternoon at Cooper Field. The Hoyas moved to 1-0 on the season while the Wildcats fell to 0-1.

Barnes finished 25-of-33 with the four touchdowns and one interception. Two of the touchdown passes went to Justin Hill (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) who had a team-high six catches for 62 yards. Brandon Williams (Germantown, Md./Northwest) finished with a team-high 66 yards receiving and a touchdown while Alex Valles (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) led the ground attack with 96 yards on 11 carries.

Defensively, the Hoyas caused three turnovers as David Akere (Carrollton, Texas/Hebron) forced and recovered a fumble and Jake Johnson (Corapolis, Pa./West Allegheny) and Ramon Lyons (Orlando, Fla./Ocoee/West Orange) each had interceptions. Bryan Jefferson (Vienna, Va./Annandale) led the way with seven tackles, while J'V'on Butler (Melbourne, Fla./Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy) and Blaise Brown (New Orleans, La./St. Augustine/Loomis Chaffee) each chipped in six.

Henry Darmstadter (Alexandria, Va./George Mason) was a perfect 5-for-5 in extra points and connected on a 27-yard field goal.

After a scoreless first quarter, that included a Davidson missed field goal off the right upright, the Hoyas jumped on the board early in the second stanza. Facing a third-and-eight, Barnes fired an 18-yard pass to Hill for the touchdown to put the Blue & Gray up, 7-0.

The GU defense forced a quick three-and-out from the Wildcats, capped by a crucial pass breakup from linebacker Leo Loughery (Glenshaw, Pa./Central Catholic). On the ensuing possession, Darmstadter knocked in a 27-yard field to extend the lead to 10-0.

Davidson cut into the lead with a 56-yard touchdown pass, but the Hoyas marched right back down the field, fueled by a 56-yard dash up the middle by Valles to the Davidson 6-yard line. Barnes eventually found Justin Harrell (New Orleans, La./Newman) for a 2-yard touchdown pass with just two seconds remaining to give Georgetown a 17-7 lead going into the locker rooms at halftime.

During Davidson's first drive of the second half, Akere stepped up and stopped the Wildcats' Stockton McGuire after a 3-yard run, stripping the ball in the process and falling on it to give the Hoyas possession. After GU converted a fourth-and-one on a run by Valles, Barnes connected with Williams for a 33-yard strike to give GU a 24-7 lead.

After another three-and-out, the Wildcats' punter botched the snap and went to one knee to pick up the ball, giving the Hoyas the ball at Davidson 11-yard line. Two plays later, Barnes found Hill from the five-yard line and Hill stretched over the goal line to push the Blue & Gray's lead to 31-7.

Georgetown's defense again stepped up on the next Davidson possession as Johnson intercepted a pass and returned it 48 yards to the Davidson 12-yard line. A penalty put the ball at the 25-yard line, but the Hoyas needed just five plays to punch it in on a 1-yard run by Christian Bermudez (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School), extending its advantage to 38-7.

Davidson cut the lead to 38-14 at the 12:58 mark of the fourth quarter, but any hopes of a comeback were squashed when Lyons picked off a pass in the end zone with 5:30 remaining to seal the victory.

The Hoyas will play their first road game next weekend, traveling to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to face Marist College. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Tenney Stadium. Last year, Georgetown defeated the Red Foxes, 34-7, in its home opener.
