No. 24 Hoyas Host Virginia Tech on Monday

Sept. 4, 2016

WASHINGTON - The No. 24 Georgetown University men's soccer squad (0-3-0) will host the Virginia Tech Hokies (3-0-0) on Monday afternoon at 1 p.m., at Shaw Field in the team's home opener. The contest will be broadcast live on GUHoyas.com with Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser calling the action.

The Blue & Gray lost, 2-1, in the final minute to the No. 7 University of Maryland Terrapins on Friday evening at Ludwig Field in front of a near-record crowd.

In the final minute with the scored tied at one, Maryland had possession and a Terrapin was taken down in the box resulting in the penalty kick. Sophomore goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) dove to his right and came up with the stop, but the rebound went right back to the shooter, Gordon Wild, who sent it right back in to score the game winner.

Leading the scoring for the Hoyas is freshman forward Achara (Enugu, Nigeria/Berkshire School [Mass.]) who scored the first goal of the season against Maryland as well as his first intercollegiate tally. Freshman forward Davey Mason (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and junior midfielder Matt Ledder (Falls Church, Va./Gonzaga) assisted on Achara's goal and have one point apiece on the season, respectively.

Marcinkowski has been huge in the net with 19 saves in three games and a 1.33 GAA.

Virginia Tech downed South Floriday, 4-1, on Friday evening to start the season 3-0-0. Marcelo Acuna leads the squad with four goals on the season including two in the USF win. In total, five Hokies have scored a goal this season. The squad opened the season with a 1-0 double overtime victory over then-No. 18 Ohio State. They followed that up with a 3-0 win over Oakland on Sunday.

The Hoyas are 2-1 all-time against the Hokies with all three meetings coming at home. The last meeting was a 2-1 Georgetown victory in overtime on Sept. 24, 2003.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Live stats and a webcast featuring Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
